First, this morning I find out that
Arrested Development is cancelled. Then this evening I find out that
SciFiction.com will stop publishing at the end of the year.
Neither of these things is really surprising. AD has struggled in the ratings since it began, and Fox cutting back on the number of episodes in Season Two was a bad sign. And SciFi.com was paying authors the best rate on the market, while giving the stories away for free online. I still feel kind of like I've been punched in the stomach twice today.
AD is just one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, and is so chock-full of subtle funny little things that it gets better with repeated viewings. I'm just in awe of the writers' skill at plotting episodes and long-term storylines, and their wordplay is fantastic. When AD is gone, there will once again be nothing left on network television that I want to watch.
SciFi.com published some of my favorite science fiction and fantasy stories of the last few years:
Goddesses by Linda Nagata, a hopeful tale about science in future India.
Cine Rimettato by A.R. Morlan, a story about technology that allows users to change the actors in a movie (like substituting Chris Farley for Jim Carrey in Cable Guy).
Angels and You Dogs, a goofy but warm fantasy story.
This bites.
