Cute little angsty MaesRoy ficcy I made in response to a request on fic_on_demand. Spoilers for post-Maes death, oh, whoops...gave it away right there. Oh well, everyone knew anyway. Ha...
Answer To Request By: Skellywag
Fandom: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Pairing: FRIENDSHIP MaesRoy. Again, I reiterate, FRIENDSHIP
Warnings: Um...none, really. Slightly angsty, and if you haven't seen pretty much any of the series, then there might be slight spoilers, but again, only if you've seen less than half of the first season.
Authoress's Note: This is set to the song Only An Ocean Away by Sara Brightman. Not a songfic, but it makes nice little background sound. I'd really like to thank skellywag for the challenge of using the song. I really like it, and it works really, really well. Plus, I got an evil plot bunny or so off my back! Yay for me! Ok, anyway, on with storyness...
Roy sighs, pressing his face against the cold glass of his window. ‘Maes,’ he thinks desperately, feeling the pull of tears against his cheeks. He squeezes his eyes shut, trying to block out the sight of the little girl and her mother walking down the street.
“Why’d you have to go?” he whispers miserably to the glass. He can feel the lump in his throat, can hear the effect it had on his voice. Can feel the heat of tears burning against the ice of the windows. Can feel the sticky warmth that is the sign of just how much he misses his friend. Can feel the pain from trying to restrain the pain he’s been suffering all day. The pain he’s been suffering since…since then.
“Maes,” Roy whimpers, face crumbling into the pain- and shock-torn visage only He has known. The view before him swims, and Roy blinks quickly.
Hughes is dead. Gone. Never going to return to his office ever again. No more pictures of Gracia and Elysia, no more rumination on the beauty of the women in his life, no more Maes. It just doesn’t seem fair, it isn’t fair! How can someone as good as Maes Hughes be killed by something as dirty and sordid as Envy?
Roy slowly leaves the window and his office, slowly walks down the street to the cemetery. Foot in front of foot, he makes his way over to the freshest lump of turned earth. Once he reaches it, he kneels down in front of it, ignoring the mud all over his knees.
“Maes?” he whispers, rubbing a hand over the tombstone. “It’s Roy. I…”
Speaking his thoughts has never been his strong point. Talking about his emotions is one of his weaknesses. It was funny, only Maes had ever been able to get him to open up and actually talk. And now Maes is gone, and the one thing he needs to do is open up and talk.
“I…I miss you,” he manages to whimper before dissolving completely into tears. His friend is gone, is some place where he can’t follow him. It’s not fair! It’s not! He’s so far away. It seems to Roy he’ll never see him again.
In truth, Roy’s never believed in any form of afterlife. But, with Maes gone…
Maybe the idea’s not insane as he seems to think. He is an alchemist, after all. He knows there is a Gate. Perhaps Maes was just on the other side of the Gate. Fullmetal had said that they went before the Gate to try to bring back their mother.
Yes, that must be it. Maes was just on the other side of the Gate. The same Gate he himself used on a daily basis, the same Gate he approached every day to create flame where previously only air had existed.
Suddenly Maes doesn’t feel so far away. After all, he was only on the other side of the Gate…
OWARI
Awww, cute angstyness...*sniffle sniffle*
