After Donnie dies, they move to California.
She spends her summers on beaches, wondering whydidgodletthathappenhowdidtheenginejustfalllikethatDonnieDonnieDonnie.
She goes to Harvard, becomes a lawyer.
She becomes the Well Rounded Adult she was Meant To Be.
She marries, has kids. Divorces.
But still, she dreams of walking in the door and the screaming crash and the imagined sound of her little brother being crushedcrushedcrushedkilled.
-
Her mother dies and soon after her father.
She goes back to Virginia, steps into that old, old house.
(why didn't you sell it?)
(we couldn't. it just....donnie....)
The first night, she doesn't sleep.
She hears moans, whimpers, every time she closes her eyes.
Things move, rattle, shake.
-
On the third night, she runs a hot bath.
The people who had rented the house from her parents for awhile had said that a family member had died here at some point. They hadn't said of what, and that'd been suspicious enough.
But she'd investigate tomorrow.
Right now, all she wanted was a nice, warm, ba---
-
"Ms. Briarley!"
She coughs, hacks up water, screaming in her head. The medic holds her shoulder and the whhheeeooooo, wwhhheeeooooo of police cars and ambulances wail in her ears.
Then she's lifted up and away.
-
"Elizabeth Briarley?"
She looks up to see two handsome men, looking bedraggled but hopeful. She shivers from the cold, remembers what the medic said about them.
"Y-You saved me, right? Called 911," she groans, sits up. There's a mechanical beep beep of her heartbeat in her ear as she peers at them. "Thanks,"
There's a slight pause and the taller one shifts uneasily. "Hey, Ms. Briarley, d'you mind if...if we ask you some questions about that house?"

"How's the Yarn Barn working out for you?"
Elizabeth wakes up, clutching her necklace in the hospital, rain falling down in torrents outside the window. That...that couldn't have been---
"You've got to be the most boring older sister ever," the tall man, the one from before, grins from the chair beside the window. Only, the grin on his face isn't his. It's too wide and sarcastic to be his. "And, y'know, you never did tell me how one can suck a fuck,"
"Donnie?"
He grins and his eyes aren't green, they're Donnie's bright blue.
"Bingo,"
Elizabeth clambers out the bed and hugs her little brother for all she's worth. He awkwardly lets her cry on his shoulder, until she pulls away, eyes bright.
-
They talk.
(why'd you divorce him?)
(couldn't do what he should've)
Mostly about little things.
(cunningham shot himself. you see him up there?)
(maybe.)
It's fun, for awhile.
But then the big question comes up.
"How did you get here, Donnie?"
And that slow smirk that comes on that handsome man's face is all Donnie, creepy little Donnie.
