Visitors to parks in Hamburg have been warned to watch out for exploding toads.

Several thousand toads in the German city have mysteriously spontaneously exploded, sending entrails and body parts over a wide area.

Witnesses say the toads swell up to three-and-a-half times their normal size before blowing up.

As well as leaving toad parts scattered around parks and open spaces, the mystery condition has decimated the city's toad population.

Nature protection worker Werner Smolnik said during the last four days at least 1000 toads had died in scenes reminiscent of a science fiction film.

He said, "It could be an unknown virus, or a fungus that has infected the water, or a defence mechanism against aggressive crows which have appeared in the area recently."

"But we haven't a clue. Soon there will be no toads left."
