Aka the one where I needed to break up a canon couple I have Rather Strong Feelings about and make myself believe it (and consequently made the thing a lot more depressing than the original fic XD;). Despite the fact that I will probably still be going OH GOD THE ENDLESS, LIFE-EATING CANON REVIEW over this fic by this time next year, I also have exactly zero (0) idea if the characterisation is any cop, so, uh. Fandom first-time nerves + not enough time to solicit a beta before deadline = nooot the greatest combination, really.
All that said, I'm inclined to consider it a victory that despite how much this fic fought me, I came out the other side of revisions not remotely hating it! (Although considering how thoroughly it bombed during the anonymous period, that may not extend to the rest of the world, ahahaha.)

Anyway, now I actually can flail about it without completely breaking anonymity: one big perk of the Endless, Life-Eating Canon Review (tm), at least, was being reminded of just how damn good the first season of this show was. JFC, IT WAS SO FUCKING GOOD. (And really, really benefits from marathoning, it turned out, as the filler plots that made the season drag watching it week to week barely registered as a speedbump. Not to mention how much smoother the ramp-up of the Storybrooke plot arc was, which seriously worked in its favour.) At the time, actually getting Emma vs. Magic and Emma vs. Fairytale Land in season 2 was thrilling and awesome, but going back to rewatch s1 now after three seasons of all magical drama all the time, I realise that what made that first season so great was the narrative tension between the RL drama of cursed Storybrooke and the magical drama of the Enchanted Forest, and it makes me kind of sad that's something the show can never have again.
Possibly this might explain why show keeps losing me for a while every half season since then, heh.
(Seriously, though, THAT SEASON, fucking hell. It took me almost two weeks to get through my first run of started-with-for-reasons-of-greater-fic-relevance s2; I blazed through s1 in two days.)
