This reminds me of a funny story.

My brother asked me to baby sit his kids. Little did I know that other babysitters refused his earlier requests, you will find out why later. Shortly after I arrived, expecting an uneventful and relaxing day, my nephew sprayed me with the garden hose. I thought nothing of it and did not punish him. He then soaked me with the hose, and in retaliation I did the same to him. Of course, his brother and sister saw me doing this and, as they like to stick together, they all spray me with the hose. I thought we better go inside and things would quieten down. Then they started to raid the fridge, they ate all the cheese, using a very sharp knife to cut it. I thought for the sake of their fingers and the remaining cheese, I better put an end to it. Of course, they became even more indignant and eventually I threw them out of the house and locked the door. They became even more angry and tried to break in through the window.

Anyway, when my brother arrived home, the first thing he did was ask how the kids behaved. I wonder why this was the first thing he said! Not wanting to disappoint my brother, I said the kids were perfect angels. And then I left.

Later I found out the kids, told him all the details of the days events trying to paint me in a bad light. Well, it backfired. My brother realized the kids were misbehaving and made them apologize to me. I came out smelling like a rose because I said good things about his kids even though they misbehaved.

The reason I thought of this story is it's an example of following the approach above actually worked for me.
