Poem to a body part

Jul 14, 2010 23:08

This assignment was to write a poem to a body part, and I chose my hands. Any honest critique is wanted :)

Hands

Hands, you’ve been
enlisted for
construction.
You were given freely
at my birth
attached seamlessly
to my wrists
through collaborations
of bones, joints, veins, skin
that form you
into
hands.
How a single
sperm and egg cell
join and
create your complexity
I do not know,
it’s a wonder,
and so I say
you were given.
You have no mouth
you are understated
you speak
through work,
as tools
of design.
You are instruments
constructing me.

Long fingers,
you create
into existence
what I originally imagine.
Design of lettering,
Design of food,
Design of color and cleanliness
you take the paint
the video camera
the green vegetables
the vacuum
the pencil
and you begin
forming.
My sense of design
flows through you
my decisions
you mold,
my life-construction is funneled
through your sculpting.
