Plague: Loss of Sight

Aug 01, 2011 22:52

Sight is very important to an architect. Ariadne always got a feel for what she she would create from studying the buildings and their facades closely. When she woke up free of her cold, but without any sight she could have cried. However she was made of sterner stuff than that ( Read more... )

Eames is wandering the corridors of their new home when he hears Ariadne calling out. He's not about to ignore her when she sounds like that, plaintive, on the edge of panic. Moving his way through the hall, he finds his way to her bedroom. It takes him barely a moment to see her feeling her way across the wall before he's at her side, hand on her elbow.

"Love? What's wrong?"

"Eames?" she turns her head towards his voice. "Do....do my eyes look alright to you?"

It's the way she's moving that really tells him something's not quite right, the way she twists to the sound of his voice rather than his obvious presence.

"Darling, can you see me?"

"No..." she's trying to keep the panic out of her voice as she steps in closer to him. "I can't make out anything."

"Okay."

He's not prepared for this, not at all. Eames is able to keep cool under fire, to withhold any amount of torture, but the minute someone in his family is threatened his blood runs cold. With his hand on her arm, Eames bites down on his lower lip, tries to stop himself from panicking.

"Okay, Ariadne. You're going to have to trust me, I'm going to get you downstairs to the kitchen and then hopefully we'll be able to figure out what's going on."

"I trust you," she says quietly. Eames had kept her safe in dreams. Slowly she started walking forward. "I don't understand...I was sick last week, but I feel fine and now this."

"Sick?"

He slides a hand around her waist, holds her to him as he leads her through the bedroom and into the hall. "It's okay, we'll figure something out. Arthur and I will keep you safe and we will find out what this is."

"I had the flu or something, it was going around the place. I'm glad you missed it, I guess you'd be unbearable sick." She tries to joke to make this easier for the pair of them.

"Oh, I'm sorry love. I should've been here to make sure you were all right."

He doesn't comment on anything else, aiding her around the hall before he stops at the foot of the stairs. He's not good with directions and he doesn't want her killing herself.

"Hang on," he mutters and then leans, sweeping her up into his arms, bridal style, and tucking her in to his body. "I know this is highly undignified, pet. But I'd rather you didn't fall all the way down these stairs, so bear with me."

"At least you didn't put me in a fireman's sling," she says resting her head against his chest. "It's okay, you didn't know I was sick."

He huffs out something that is not quite a laugh, voice caught with worry as he carries her down the stairs, careful not to jog her or knock anything. When they get to the ground floor he puts her back on her feet, frowning as he guides her to the kitchen.

"Do you want me to call Arthur?"

She squeezes Eames hand, as she finds the kitchen counter with her other. He needs backup and she gets it. "Yeah...I'll just somewhere here."

He waits, helps her up on to a stool, hands going to her cheek to try and get a good look at her for a moment. He's not used to this, not at all, and not for the first time he's beginning to regret this place.

"Listen to me, we'll fix this, okay?"

"I trust you," she murmurs. "At least I know this isn't a dream now."

"Really?"

He almost sounds convinced that it is a dream. "You don't think sudden blindness means a lapse in reality?"
