So I thought today would be the day where I sign onto LJ, I crack my knuckles, stretch out my short fingers and type away about how wonderfully crazy law school is...and yet, I get here...I sign on, I stretch and crack my knuckles and I start typing and NOTHING.
I never want to talk about law school. I don't like talking about it to anyone who is not in law school. It's the strangest feeling. I just feel like I speak Martian when I go into law school talk. I can talk about briefs and cases, and elements of Torts: Strict Liability, Intentional Torts, Negligence (SIN), Contracts, gifts, promises, when to enforce a contract, reliance, Civil Procedure: Rule 12(b)(6) motion to dismiss, Rule 26 and its amendments, Rule 14, Rule 19, Rule 12 in general, I can tell you what entails a proof, or legal memorandum or how writing a memo is so redundant and boring you dry your eyes out from reading what you wrote....yes I can tell you all of that kinda of stuff but in truth, what does it mean? In my eyes, it means nothing to you guys...so I really do not know what to write about when it comes to sharing the whole law school experience. But I am going to try...I am not going to give up!
But I do have a confession: I talk to Tash and Toya about law school...that's probably because they are in law school with me (different schools). And yet, we all have this common thread and understanding. There is this universal understanding...this moral fiber that connects me to Toya and Tash...and yet we go to completely different law schools...we are all 1Ls going through it together. It just seems easier to talk to them about the various nuiances that law school brings to one's life with someone who can relate. I love my fellow 1Ls and law students as a whole. They are some crazy ass characters!
So....let me see...let's talk about law school
Gay Boy - One we have a lot of gays at my school...but I have this one particular gay boy...he's a sweet heart. He's part of my walk to school catch the sub crew. He unfortunately has started to slack off and not keep up with the reading. In addition to that he has his hands on an outline of a particular class and he does not want to share the wealth but he wants to brag about it. It initially bothered me...and in fact it still does, but I am not holding it against him. He did however burn some bridges within our "crew" so people no longer want to work with him. Lesson learned from him: If you have something and you're not willing to share it, do not mention it to your fellow colleagues because they'll hate you for it!
Barbies (recently renamed Plastics) - They are the good-looking white girls with one exception. (there seems to always be one). They are led by the oh so beautiful and oh so talented sexy star. They initial rubbed everyone the wrong way. They staked out seats together, they chat throughout class, and one acts like a complete DIVA...however, once you get to know them...or at least the star/leader of the crew, she's is actually sweet. She knows what she's talking about...and knows how to dress all at the same time. Lesson: Don't judge a book by it's beautiful exterior they may have brains afterall!
Various Clubs: Simply put, don't join too many and always join the club with the best outlines. Lesson: do not look at the outlines until after you do your own.
No Big Study Groups: DO NOT...I repeat DO NOT study in a very large group...two to four people is a great...anything more will be a social party. Lastly, do not be afraid to KICK people out the group or ditch your group for a new one. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do if that group becomes a social party. Me personally, I left a whole group behind because they just kept on talking. Now I study by myself and confer with groups later. These groups are ever changing and we actually just come together and work on PRE MADE OUTLINES. If you do not have an outline as proof you cannot sit to discuss. It's been great thus far!
Professors: Get to know them. Get to know them well. Learn what they are looking for so you can perform to their standards!
Okay...I gotta study for Contracts.
