Jun 29, 2006 11:39

So, it's my birthday on Monday and I don't have any idea what I want. Anyone have any good ideas for things that I should get for my birthday? My parents are mad at me cause I can't come up with anything. Tell me what I want for my birthday ( Read more... )

As someone about to enter law school, I would offer this advice: don't do it if you're not sure. There's plenty of time to dick around and figure it out (see: Me, Matt Thomas, Chris White for varying degrees of this).

The worst thing you could possibly do is rush into that kind of expensive decision without being sure of it, at least to the degree that you know the degree will be useful to you no matter what you decide to do. If you think there's a good chance you want to get into theater, though, or commercial fishing, I would say that a law degree may not be so helpful.

Something else I would point out is that you could reapply and do a 4-year JD/MA program. Many schools offer interesting combinations that include Public Policy or Urban Planning, such as UNC.

Anyway, it took me a long time to decide what to do, but I feel very strongly about a law degree being right for me now, and I am very glad I waited until I felt that sure.

Or be a garbageman. WTF do I know?

Love,
Fat Oldman Jon

I'm actually pretty burned out on the whole next gen console arms race thing. I'm really enjoying my DS just fine. All I need is a DS, a super nintendo, and a playstation, and I'm good to go. Maybe I'll buy a few more DS games for my birthday!

Anyone know of any fun games (especially RPG's) for either the DS or the GBA?

aside form the Mario & Luigi DS title (which is only marginally an rpg) there are no others for the DS I would recommend. I would say get Age of Empires DS for sure. Other hits for those two systems:

GBA:
Golden Sun
fire emblem
lunar
drill dozer

DS:
nintendogs
warioware
animal crossing
mario kart
phoenix wright
brain training (whatever the eff its called)

I've got age of empires, mario kart, the new super mario brothers, and metriod prime. I thought there was a zelda game for GBA that would be fun. Wasn't there a secret of mana game as well?

the zelda game for the gba is really good, but really easy.

I do not recommend Sword of Mana unless you're a fanboy of the series, like me. Its not great.

with that in mind, there is also FF Tactics and FF Dawn of Souls

I am certainly a fanboy. I think I should be able to find a bunch of RPGs to keep me interested. Also, they re-did breath of fire 1 and 2! I never got to play those for SNES! And they're re-releasing practically every FF game they ever made that was worth anything. Just waiting for the Chrono Trigger remake...

I'm getting Phoenix Wright hopefully this evening if my mang gets off his butt. I REALLY like Kirby's Canvass Curse.

I agree with you 100%. That's why I ended up deferring my acceptances and taking (at least) one year off before going to school. I don't want to be saddled with such a colossal debt for no reason. I mean I know I want to do something positive (I would love to work on social justice or public interest issues), but I also know that there are plenty of paths that could take me there.

I'll figure stuff out eventually.

Do you know where you're going to school now?

As of right now, more things are in the air then before. Mia and I just put down a deposit on a new apartment in Baltimore, so its like a 99% chance we'll be living here next year. If WM comes a-calling, I am going to try to defer, I think, using my financial obligations as reasoning (apparently they accept valid reasons and will allow a 1 year deferral). If they say no, we'll break the lease I guess. Can't say no to WM.

If I don't get in to WM, I am at least accepted at UB. My thoughts right now involve pondering taking the LSATs again to see if I can get into a higher-caliber school, which would involve deferring at UB for a year. If this is the case, we would stay in Baltimore anyway and I would work and take the lSATs again.

Sorry for the confusing answer, but we've been going over everything a lot in the last few days and I am still just hoping I get in at WM and can defer for a year.

So no, I don't know. :)
