How Music Still Impacts My Life

Follow up fo my 7th grade Wells Speech behind the cut

I'm back again to discuss how music continues to impact my life.   If you read my essay that  I posted which was my Wells Speech from 7th  Grade  use that as a little bit of background.  I shall now go on to discuss how music continues to impact my life.

I should note that I have been a big fan of broadway showtunes since the 9th grade.  It is not my only favorite type of music  but it has  definitley impacted me in a huge way.  My first Broadway show was in 1997 when  I  saw Beauty and The Beast.  I remember being in awe of the costume and set design.. thus began my  interest in musical theatre. Since then  I have seen 6 other Broadway shows including RENT and Jersey Boys.  I hope to add more to the list.  Once I got to high school  I had to choose between being in band or chorus...  I stuck with chorus  though I did take piano lessons outside of school for about a year.    I  sang many different songs through out my four years in choir and it definitley got me interested in a whole  bunch of different genres.  I've honestly lost track of all the songs I sang in choir but if  I could pin point   3 favorites they would be Elijah Rock,The Little Beggar Man and any showtune medley that we sang.

I first got involved with  musical theatre my sophomore year at Souhegan and  I have been hooked on theatre ever since. My first  musical  I did stage crew for was HAIR which was a ton of fun  though probably not my favorite musical out off all the ones  that were done throughout my four years. Two fond memories  that I have of being in choir are compettion trips to New York and Disney World (Power to the OLE Warrriors)  and being inducted into the Tri M Music Honor Society my senior year.   I think that the song  I sang for my recital piece was probably my best performance ever.. aside from my Stritcly Music performance of  I Will Survice by Gloria Gaynor that had the audience screaming for an encore.  For my recital piece I sang  One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey which   I dedicated to the memory of Tim and Kyle Crisman  who had died in a car accident  the previous year  Whenever I listen to that song on my  Ipod  I think back to that performance.

I continued to be involved in theatre throughout college.  I was in an acapella singing group my first semester in college and that was blast to be in.  I had never been in acapella in high school so it was a different experience for me.   My favorite memory of college theatre was probably sophomore year when  I woked backstage for the spring musical The Apple Tree.  That was such a fun play to be in. I especially liked the song You Are Not Real (especially the line  No godess will ever get my heart to  throb cause the girl of my dreams  is a slob) Such a fun show to be on the stage crew for.

Getting away from musical theatre  briefly another genre that has had a huge impact on me  is country.   I have  always been a fan of Shania Twain though  I think she's be more considered as a countr/pop cross over.  When  I worked at the New London Barn Playhouse  one of the shows that  I worked on  was called Always Patsy Cline.  I had mostly heard covers of  a few of her songs that Leann Rimes did but wasn't famliar with a lot of her other songs until  I saw that show.  I was instantly hooked. Especially on songs like  I Fall To Pieces, Lovesick Blues and Leavin On Your Mind.   Other  country  artists  I like include  Carrie Underwood,Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban.  We took my sister to see Rascal Flatts for her 16th birthday..  I must say that was probably  the best concert  I have ever been too aside from last year's American Idol tour.  I  wlll always cherish the memory of it .

Ok.. back to musical theatre..  my favorite musical has always been Sound of Music.  I first saw that movie when  I was 10 and have not stopped listening to soundtrack since then... though  I have to admit Do Re Mi  kind of grates on my nerves after awhile.   Personally  I  have always liked any musical by Rogers and Hammerstien. They are my favorite composers of all time besides the composers who wrote West Side Story. What  I like the best aboit Rogers and Hammerstien musical is character dynamic between  the coiples who fall in love with each  (  Ie Curly and Laurey  in Oklahoma, Rolf and Lise in Sound of Music)   If you have ever been to Vermont and haven't gone  you should go the  Von Trapp family lodge.   I went there for a family vacation in summer 2003 and though   I was sick the whole entire vacation  I did learn  a lot about the Von Trapp family that I did not  learn from watching  the movie.

So  music still continues to impact my life everyday.. as  does  musical thaatre.  I have been involced in theatre for 10 years and have met so many people along the way who continue to influence and shape me into a better performer. I am a better person  for knowing all these people and having worked with them... and yes this includes the people from the PTA Play.
