BLOGGING PSYCHO PASS - I Don't Like Your Detective Work

(Episode One: Crime Coefficient)

I’m not totally sure what happened the first time, but I pretty much don’t remember the first six or so minutes of this episode. I remember it visually but I was obviously not paying close attention to what I was looking at or… ah, now I remember. I was fiddling with subtitle settings.

I remember seeing that opening piece between Makishima Shougo and Kougami Shinya but I… Here’s the thing with foreshadowing. When it’s the first thing I see in the first episode, I don’t care enough about the series or characters to remember it and internalize its significance. So by the time I got to that scene in whichever episode it was later, I didn’t remember I had watched that at all (also partially because of the subtitle thingy). It wasn’t until rewatching this episode for blogging that I realized what was going on. That being said; the relationship between Kougami and Makishima could be romantic but for the fact that they’re trying to kill each other. More talk on that in later posts.

Again, because I was fiddling with subtitles I didn’t get any of the briefing on the criminal that made off with that female hostage. I would have learned a lot more about Psycho Passes sooner had I not been so distracted. Not like you don’t learn it soon enough but still. The Crime Coefficients becomes obvious quicker with the Dominators, but I hadn’t quite caught on to the hue being scanned by a street scanner and his resisting emergency therapy. I appreciated Masaoka’s statement that people don’t handle their stress well anymore. Which is kind of true of today, even. People really buckle and destroy themselves (and others) under extreme pressure.
The simplest statements jump out with new life in this series. One thing I would have loved to know was what elevated the man's stress level in the first place. Was he just embittered with his place in life? Or did something happen to him? And then aftermath details. Not regarding him of course, but the woman. I really wish they showed any of the emergency therapy sessions, or how/where they keep people while they’re recovering. There really wasn’t anything specific and I wanted to know if it was just regular therapy that we’re all familiar with (like Ginoza’s therapy) or if it’s more… ah, I don’t know. I just would have loved to see how people in the near future are rehabilitated in “emergency therapy.”

I was immediately endeared to Masaoka as I was before. They set it up that way on purpose, of course, but I cannot deny how fatherly he is. And patient. He bothers to explain things to the newbie who otherwise has no clue what she’s doing. Which brings me to…

What the hell, Akane? Let’s just sum up your noob skills this way: stop the pros from paralyzing a woman so that your agitation makes her go absolutely insane warranting death and then calm her down enough again to paralyze her. And let’s not forget you shot someone in the spine. I honestly HATE this type of anime character, and she’s a practiced archetype. The spunky girl out to change the rules in drama queen style. Her type of character is the sort that makes me stop watching an anime in a flash. But for the fact that three people were assuring me of how great the series was, I could have stopped watching it there. She redeems herself later (sort of) but I’m much more in favor of the Enforcers in this show.

First episodes are always a drag. But this did catch my attention. Mostly because of the Dominators. Before I’m later stripped of my illusion as to how amazing they are, I thought they were just the coolest technology ever. I totally cringed when I saw how the Lethal Eliminator mode works though. He basically exploded from the inside out!

Side note: notice my new icon? Played around in GIMP with some filters/light effects. I don't totally remember what scene this is from. I just pulled a pick off of google because I haven't had time for extensive projects. But I wanted to enhance the contrast of light and dark because... well you know, she's an Enforcer. She works to put criminals away, so there must be good in her, but she is also (according to Sibyl) innately evil.
