[Say hello to Amanda's alcoholic father, who is at the core of most (if not all) of her many issues.]

I don't really get how this shit works. I get what this place is for, but it's not making a damn bit of sense...especially seein' as how I died of a fuckin' heart attack when my kid was in prison.

[He shrugs it off, like it doesn't even matter to him ( Read more... )

Mr. Young, I'm Dr. Sarah Harding. I'm your daughter's warden.

I'd appreciate it greatly if you minded the things you say over the network. We tolerate a lot here, but "junkie slut" doesn't fly with me, and neither does airing Amanda's dirty laundry in public.

Otherwise, I'd be happy to meet with you to discuss her progress here.

So you're in charge of her. What the fuck did she do this time?

I'm her warden - and I don't think she'd appreciate me discussing why she's here.

Confidentiality, just like between patients and their therapists. I'm sure you understand.

Therapists are for weak people who can't handle their own shit. I raised 'er to know that.

Lucky for all of us that I'm not a therapist.

Cut the shit, lady. What'll you tell me if I agree to meet with you?

Really, it's more about what you'll tell me. You see, up until today, I've been really curious about you.

Are you in her room?

[A few minutes later, Sarah made her way down to level eight. She'd been waiting for an opportunity to get her inmate to open up about her parents - and now she could see why Amanda didn't want to talk about him.

She had her tape recorder in her pocket. Before approaching Amanda's door, she pulled it out and spoke into it.]

Amanda, I'm recording my conversation with Frank Young. [A beat.] I don't want you thinking I was doing this behind your back.

[With that, she slid the recorder back in her pocket and knocked.]

[Frank pulled the door open, looking Sarah over with aggravation.]

I don't see why you couldn't just talk to me over these video things.

[Sarah raised her eyebrows at the man, sizing him up. He was a good head taller than she was.

After a moment, she held out her hand, opting to be diplomatic and ignore his comment.]

Nice to meet you in person, Mr. Young.

[He shakes her hand distractedly just because she offered hers. If she hadn't, he wouldn't have bothered to offer his.]

Yeah. Are you gonna come in, or do we do this in the hall?

[She decided right then and there that she doesn't like this man in the least. However, she followed him into Amanda's room.]

Thanks for inviting me.

[Polite, but also an indicator to the recorder that she was in Amanda's room.]

Mr. Young, I'm going to be completely honest with you: it's a little baffling to me that you're not concerned about your daughter's presence on the Barge. You do know what it is we do here, don't you?

You rehabilitate criminals or something, right? Like I said, this ain't her first time in prison.

[Hm.]

I know she's been incarcerated before. However, the Barge isn't exactly a prison. We rehabilitate criminals, yes - but they come here post-mortem. It's a second chance, so to speak, to...

[Shrug.]

...Make better people of themselves. Set things right.

Look. Sarah. Let me save you a big headache.

[Frank leans over a little, as if in confidentiality.]

That girl can't be fixed. Believe me, I tried.
