films:

jan

casablanca
blonde venus
the girl with the dragon tattoo - rooney mara is a babe (although she seems kind of boring irl?)
anna christie - i like garbo but this was only okay
persona - so good
shame - the best... also the most distressing
2046 - really beautiful
bridesmaids - overrated tbh
the artist - overrated tbh (although kind of cute)
the man with a movie camera

feb

no manifesto - sean moore = babe
the cabinet of dr caligari - yes
of human bondage - boring
top hat - boring, although i watched this at like 9 am and i can't appreciate anything at that hour
edward II - gr8. derek jarman is the best.
nostalgia
l'age d'or
un chien andalou - lol these films
the hours
le jour se leve/daybreak - boring... think there was someone attractive in it but i can't remember (this is obv important)
the reaping - omg so so so so bad. watch for lolz.
mildred pierce - joan crawford looks a bit like lara pulver in this?!? just me?
the woman in black - lol danrad
bicycle theives - boring (lol i can't be dealing with some of the 'classic' films i have to watch)

mar

the beach - really bad, also psuedo-deep which is not a good look
the seventh seal - gr8
on the waterfront - i could have been... somebody. i could have been a contender. (i don't really remember what happened in this)
north by northwest - okay, but i think hitchcock is overrated tbh
bonnie and clyde - gr8

april

nosferatu - YES
the truman show - interesting concept but not that great
the pirates in an adventure with scientists - saw this in the cinema and it was like 90% young children. the film was okay, but not great.
der golem - ALSO YES
the hunger games - enjoyable, but not the best thing ever
signs - SO BAD

may

reservoir dogs - hmmmm not sure how i feel about tarantino
weekend - really interesting
mysterious skin - interesting... i watched this with the cinema society and that was kind of awkward
blow - terrible
pleasantville - really enjoyed this
the birds
psycho - only hitchcock film i've actually found worth the hype tbh

june:

howls moving castle
spirited away - i've technically seen both of these before but we watched them at school over quite a few weeks so i'm adding them to the list. love them both, esp. howl's moving castle. FEELINGS.
heavenly creatures - i read about what happened a few years ago on wikipedia (here) and had been meaning to see this for a while. it was pretty good, but some of the (over-)acting was a bit off-putting. it's definitely an interesting story, anyway.

july

a matter of life and death - really enjoyed this. so cute and charming.
my summer of love - not gr8. would not recommend.
casino royale - i don't really buy daniel craig as james bond?!? but whatever pretty much just watched this for eva green. (♥)
gosford park - i... have forgotten most of what happened? but i think this was good
get him to the greek - actually pretty entertaining, but i had low expectations...
hanna - this was good, but i felt maybe there was something missing? idk what though

aug

ted - had really low expectations for this, but it was actually relatively funny. i probably wouldn't watch it again, but i didn't hate it either.
indiana jones and the search for the crystal skulls - i only watched this because it was on tv and also cate blanchett. it was really bad but I REGRET NOTHING.

tv:

sherlock s2
sailor moon s1 - sailor moon is flawless. also FEELINGS.
luther s1+2 - loved it. some of the episodes were a bit too intense for me? (even though i am intensely intense). i think i preferred the first series.
game of thrones s1 (currently watching)
the bachelor - LOL MY LIFE. sometimes i really enjoy watching bad reality shows. i can't believe (SPOILER ALERT~) he chose the girl who had previously sold a story to the press about a footballer she dated. ROOKIE ERROR.
adventure time (currently watching) - so cute... but it also translates really well for someone as old and mature as myself. like, some of the jokes or whatever are not what i'd expect from a children's cartoon? because idk if children would get some of them. idk what i'm trying to say here!
the great british bake off (currently watching) - whenever i watch this it makes me really hungry but APART FROM THAT it is gr8
the thick of it s4

books: (omg this is embarrassingly short)

goodbye to berlin - christopher isherwood (started in 2011) - weimar germany feeeelings
mrs dalloway - virginia woolf - really gr8. i think i preferred orlando, but this is gr8 in different ways. so much better than to the lighthouse, which i couldn't get through.
the strange case of dr jekyll and mr hyde - robert louis stevenson - okay or whatever, but i sometimes get so bored of things when i'm studying them.
christopher and his kind - christopher isherwood (currently reading)
lipstick traces - greil marcus (currently reading) - had to take both of these back to the library before i managed to finish them (or, in the case of lipstick traces, get past the introduction) ;-;
the cruel way - ella maillart - lol so i only bought this because i wanted to know more about annemarie schwarzenbach's life. some bit of it dragged on but it was pretty interesting too, especially because they were travelling across europe/the middle east at a time when a lot of places were 'modernising', but you've still got glimpses of the older/more traditional ways of life.
all the roads are open/the afghan journey - annemarie schwarzenbach (currently reading)
disavowals - claude cahun (currently reading)
the heart is a lonely hunter - carson mccullers - not particularly cheery, but really interesting and insightful, especially in the case of the girl mick. i think it captured the awkward in-between-ness of being a teenage girl possibly better than anything else i've read. also interesting because i don't know much about the deep south/its history, so i probably learnt shit.
the little friend - donna tartt (currently reading... which means i'm starting to get through the long list of books i've bought in charity shops over the past few years which have been lying around unread)
