Madrigal was a bit of a challenge this time, at least from the standpoint of getting back up to speed. The long layoff combined with the NPC’ing and staffing I had done in between had gone a long way towards crowding all the Madrigal thoughts out of my brain space. This event also fell on a weekend between two other weekends where I was running events. So I made the conscious decision to go into this event without killing myself the week of the event trying to do last second props or costuming or super complicated writing. This time it was just a car, a pile a clothes, a couple of already completed props, point it all north and push on the gas pedal.
Well, I did do a little bit of work on Thursday to remind myself what was going on. I re-read my last few previous PEL’s to get back on track as to what I was working on. I also ended up in the company of
bakeneko for much of Thursday as she passed through my hands on her trip up north. We got to talk quite a bit about the stuff we had both been working on. And of course we gossipped and complained and told stories like a couple of high schoolers.
The trip up was uneventful. A bunch of us tried out a Thai place on the other side of town for dinner and it was a nice change of pace. We got back on site in good time and I was all ready to go by the time game started and we got hit with the traditional opening field fight. Once the packets started flying and the swords started swinging it was business as usual. It’s just like riding a bike. Well, just like riding a bike that wants to chase you around and hit you with things.
Friday night was mostly a series of fights. I did the opening battle against the vampires and the electro gizmo, and I was there for the undead that were chasing Averick around. I got in my Fox mod as well Friday night when we fought a werewolf. After some initial confusion about entry requirements I managed to get on to the Dreamfell mod. That was a lot of fun in concept and story, although the mechanics of it left me with little to do for much of the mod. But hopefully that will be something to build on.
I missed some of the late night stuff. I have to manage my sleep fairly carefully at New England events in order to not exhaust myself for the drive home on Sunday. I got surprised by an early morning pre-breakfast adventure on Saturday with
browstein. That became something of a theme for the weekend where I got to tag along with him to play my role as Pretend Ranger. Those scenes were enjoyable in part for what they were, but also because it was clear that I was getting a little bit of tailored hookup from staff. I write “I like *this*” in my PEL, and lo and behold *this* happens at an event.
Going in to the event I had a list of some things that I was expecting. It was all stuff left undone from previous events or things I was getting started with letters and info skills. By and large most of that stuff didn’t happen. In its place I ended up getting a bunch of new stuff I hadn’t seen coming. I got to do a bit of lock picking at the Kh’rewyn party. There was all the woody stuff. I got pulled in to a political social mod. So it pretty well balanced out.
I didn’t have as good at time at the large town fights as I normally do. The Vampire fight was just confusing. The Eiromon Temple fight was too brief, and those of us that didn’t get inside had very little involvement. The Two Demons fight was hard, but I don’t get a lot of satisfaction from fights that just show up unannounced and require not much more from us than just “don’t die”. The Champion of Chimera battle was a little bit better, but it suffered from the time out in the middle, and its similarity to so many previous “guard these four things” fights we have done in the past.
The Goblin Dance thing was kind of mixed. In general, I’m not fond of the semi-serious, half goofy, let’s all just run around and have fun battles like this one. I realize there was honest to goodness serious things going on, but it is hard to feel heroic fighting Giggles the Fairy and his sidekick Sir Flit. But as usually happens with these things I grumped a bit, got bored with grumping, and eventually I was running around like a doofus shooting arrows at Averick, getting chased by Her Highness Queen Lona, and getting bested by Sir
badgerrogue, Fey Knight of the Sore Legs.
It wasn’t until I started writing this PEL that I went back and noticed that I have 5 years worth of old PEL’s stored in this folder. This event was the start of my 6th year in this game. In those five years I’ve seen and been part of a lot of really cool stuff. Going forward I hope to transition a bit more into making the cool stuff happen instead of just being there when it does.
