Why am I so different?
Walking through grass littered streets
A guitar on my back I can't play
Leaving a project housing declaring my financial lack
Approaching a college struggling with educational lack.
No matter where I go
I don't fit in.
Don't stare at me,
This struggling black girl
Who is both determined
And also defeated.
Don't stare at me
With your upper middle class carelessness
Acknowledge me!
Tell me I'm not different
Because I walk to school by necessity
Rather than Choice
Acknowledge me!
But don't pity me
Just because I wear the same dingy K-Swiss
That are off-grey instead of white
I have less dirty Adidas,
Honest
Don't pity me,
please.
I don't need charity
I need acceptance.
