Susan nervously observed herself in the mirror one last time, while Hannah stood just behind her. “Susan I don’t think that the yellow ribbon in your hair will do anything to turn away Goyle’s attentions. Unless of course you had other intentions,” Hannah said teasingly.

“Oh... shut up Hannah,” Susan said grumpily as she quickly took the ribbon out of her hair.

“I’m just joking with you Susan. The ribbon looked rather nice in your hair and I’m sure it will attract other boy’s eyes as well,” Hannah said as she walked back to her bed and picked up her transfiguration books.

Susan rolled her eyes at Hannah, but couldn't hold back the smile that followed. “I’m sorry Hannah. I’m just tired of the staring, and my friends laughing at me every time Goyle stares doesn’t really help either,” Susan said pointedly. The teasing had gotten worse since that first day, especially after Hannah had found her in the hallway, too stunned to move.

Justin had even taken writing fake love notes and signing them as Goyle, always making sure to leave them in the most public of places, such as her plate at dinner and even once throwing it across the room at her in Transfiguration. McGonagall had of course seen the note and demanded it read to the entire class by Justin. Her only consolation that day was that none of the Slytherin shared that particular class, and that Justin had been made to have detention with Filch for two nights in a row.

“So ignore it Susan,” Hannah said, as she watched her friend try to secretly slide the piece of ribbon into a pocket in her robes.

“The laughter or the staring,” Susan asked sarcastically, as she picked up her books and began to walk towards the door leading to the Hufflepuff common room.

“Both I suppose,” Hannah said, unbothered by Susan sarcasm. “But, tell me, what is so bad about Gregory Goyle staring at you?”

“Well he’s certainly not the nicest fellow, now is he,” Susan asked, waiting for Hannah to give herself one last look before heading out the door.

“What’s he done? I’ve never heard him speak more than three words, so it’s unlikely he’s ever said anything rude to anyone or called them names. As far as I can see, the only bad thing he’s done is hang around with Malfoy, who, I might add, is no longer here. He is a bit intimidating, but he’s changed a bit hasn’t he?”

Susan admitted he had as they made their way down the stairs. “What about when he pushed Justin’s head into the loo at the beginning of the year?”

“Well it isn’t as if Justin didn’t deserve it. There’s been a few times when I wish I could do it myself,” Hannah said, thinking of the time when Justin had fooled her into believing that NEWTS were being given a bit earlier this year. She'd been up late for two weeks before finding out the truth.

“What are you saying Hannah? That Justin deserved to have his head in the loo?”

“Well Justin did say that Goyle’s mother was a rather attractive cow. Boys are very defensive of their mothers,” Hannah said matter of factly.

“What,” Susan exclaimed, as she made her way around the abundance of couches that made up the cozy, friendly Hufflepuff common room. The couches were all shapes, sizes and colors, and all of them seemed to beg to be sat in. At least that's what Ernie and Justin told Susan when she asked why she always found them on the couches, rather than in the library, where their studying would go much better. As the couches were empty this morning, she could only assume that the other Hufflepuffs were either at breakfast already or were still getting ready for the day.

“It’s true. You know Justin can be rather cocky from time to time. Apparently he’d gotten it into his head that day that he’d say something to Goyle.”

“Well, deserved or not, Goyle is still a Slytherin and before you say anything, he isn’t a bit handsome.”

“Or charming?”

“Not at all.”

“Which is all very well, since you’ve told me numerous times that you don’t like charming,” Hannah said, knowing very well she had talked her friend into a corner.

Susan ignored the statement and continued her way through the common room.

Hannah sighed at her friend’s hard headedness. “Susan, will Goyle still be a Slytherin four months from now when we’ve all graduated? Are you going to carry on this silly school tradition even after we’ve left Hogwart’s? Not all Slytherins are bad, just look at Bulstrode, and if you think all Hufflepuffs are angels, well ladies and gents I give you Zacharias Smith,” Hannah said in exasperation.

“No Hannah, Goyle will not always be a Slytherin. Yes, I realize that not all Slytherin are evil, but…

“But what Susan? All I am saying is to give him the benefit of the doubt and perhaps, go on a date with him if he should ask you, nothing more.”

“But…”

“No, Susan. No buts,” Hannah said as they left the common room and made their up the stairs leading to the dining hall. “Now then, you have two options. You can either put all of this out of your mind or you can simply talk to Goyle.”

“Fine.”

“Fine?”

“I’ll talk to-“

“Goyle?”

“-Ernie.”

“Why not Goyle?”

“I don't know what to talk to Goyle about because I don't know him.”

“So talk to him about that then,” Hannah pleaded, quickly becoming annoyed with her friend.

“Yes, that’s a wonderful conversation starter Hannah. Oh, excuse me Goyle, yes. I don’t know you.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

Susan sighed and turned around to her friend. “Everything is wrong with that Hannah. Now I am going to speak to Ernie on the matter. He’s seeing Millicent, maybe he can help.”

“Well fine then,” Hannah said, miffed that her friend was not going directly to the source.

“Fine,” Susan asked, surprised at the ease with which Hannah relented.

“Fine, let’s go to breakfast. Perhaps some handsome Ravenclaw will develop an attraction to me.”

Susan shook her head at her friend’s teasing.

“You will let me know if one begins staring at me at all hours of the day won’t you,” Hannah asked dreamily and then laughed as the two girls entered the dining hall.
