Upon pain of loss of friendship, I solemnly swear that there are NO Spoilers in this entry.
I just finished the last Harry Potter book. I think it's a fantastic ending, filled with some twists that even diehard fans could not predict....and there is a definitive end to the series.
It is only natural when one comes to the end of something so enduring to reflect a little. I remember when the first book came out. I had just turned 9, and my Granddad from England thought that this neat book about wizards and witches in England would be an ideal present. And then when the craze hit the States in the fall, I proudly paraded my English edition around. Like a Beatles fan since their very first gig in Hamburg, I felt like an original fan. With every book is attached a memory of my own life. Now, a full decade later, I am struck by the immensity of all this. Whatever your personal feelings about the books, the fact is that this whole series may be the greatest literary event we ever witness. Authors just don't become billionaires, and pre-teens just don't read massive 500+ pg. epics. In fact, there may be a time when I fondly recall to my kids that I grew up with Harry Potter.
