So... The South Carolina Governor, Mark Sanford, disappeared last Friday. His state security detail didn't know where he was, the Lt. Governor didn't know where he was, his office didn't know where he was, and his wife didn't even know where he was. Yesterday, his office said they were in contact with him, he was OK, and just needed to get away for a few days from the stresses of his office.
No problem, says I. Everyone needs a vacation. Especially a Republican Governor with aspirations to the Presidency. He was one of the 4 Republican Governors who refused federal money from the Stimulus (along with Alaska's Palin, Texas' Perry, and Louisiana's Jindal) to prove a point... even though those states most badly need it. Hell, I think that the stress of his predominantly Republican legislature AND state Supreme Court forcing him to take the federal money.
So he decides to go for a walk. Without telling anyone.
Today, his office and wife say that he was up in the Appalachian Mountains doing some hiking. The tone of the statements suggest that they knew all along. Which is weird because they made statements saying they didn't know earlier.
But wait, it gets weirder. You see, this weekend was Naked Hiking Day in the part of the Appalachians he was supposedly at. Which he supposedly went to alone. Without his wife. Or his security detail. Or maybe its BS and he made it up without knowing what was up. Which still leaves us with the question of where he was.
There's now an unsubstantiated story that the state vehicle he left in, along with the Governor, was spotted at the airport in Atlanta.
Hmmm... I wonder.
