I'm very new to the Torchwood fandom, and so far, I haven't came across any problems. I have noticed that in some communities and such that some fans are a little...touchy? I don't know if that is the right word, but some people come across as such.
Now, I was really confused with all this Moffat business when I went on twitter today and saw what he had posted. I didn't know what it was all about, but I was like 'Oh thanks, ruin the dreaming for us all' but I didn't see the point in getting worked up. I started off as a Doctor Who fan before Torchwood, so I dunno if I maybe just see both sides? Then again, I don't even know what all the fuss is about. Yes, I wish to every deity imaginable that Ianto would somehow come back, but there's no point in getting bitchy about it, especially when it isn't really anything to do with Moffat...but from where I am, it doesn't seem like anyone HAD been bitchy, or nasty about it, so I don't see why anyone should be horrible about the Save Ianto Campaign, especially when they do so much good (i.e. Children in Need).
If they do bring it up on the podcast, say your peace, and be done with it, because fandoms are supposed to be about fun, and enjoyment, not getting stressed out and upset.
Have I just rambled on here? lol sorry. What is the podcast btw? I've been looking for new podcasts to check out :)
ETA: I'm being a pain now, but I just check on twitter there and saw how hostile it was getting...woah...think I'll avoid most of this lol
I started with Doctor Who myself so I have always seen both sides, but I tend to get too involved in the fandom and I'm far too emotional and that's partly my problem...
People got worked up becaue as usual, some people were being both rude to either Moffat or to SIJ whom really had nothing to do with this twitter incident. The negativity towards SIJ (and people in general on the 'COE "slightly" unimpressed' side of the fence) has been building for quite a while, most of it coming from a handful of hardcores people like to call the "Pom Poms" It really kicked off on the Facebook Starz page and the main TW LJ comm. It's been snowballing for quite some months and the end result is that everytime anything like this happens, SIJ get the blame straight away and are painted in a horrible light even when the group itself are completely not involved. (like this Moffat tweet thing, SIJ didn't actually start it) I'll follow the main SIJ LJ comm, just to see what they are doing and chat to the people there because as you said, they do alot of good (their Children in Need fund I think got to over £15,000 in the end), and they are nice people. Which is also sadly how I know all this has been going on.
I think I need to slightly step back from all this, or just have myself a good old fashioned marathon or good fangirl session with some of my TW friends to remind myself of the fun it can be.
The podcast btw is called the Cultdom collective I've been a regular for close to 3 years now (I started when they used to called another name and were reviewing TW series 2 as it was airing in early 2008) It's heavily Doctor Who focused but it also covers a vast amount of different topics. Most of the callers in and hosts are mainly of an older generation, male, and really hard core sci fi nerds... I get lost sometimes, but it's fun. I'm on the most recent show, reviewing the Sarah Jane Adventures and I'm easy to recognise being the only woman and only Australian on the show. It didn't come up until after we finished recording, and people didn't react the way I throught they would so once again I was being paranoid... all was fine.
