What is the purpose of a commercial? I know they are here to try to convince me that there is yet another product that I can not live without. But are they really accomplishing their goal? NO. I have come to this conclusion based upon one simple fact. I have not changed my opinions nor my lifestyle due to any commercial I have seen. Yes, I have tried some of these advertised hicky-ma-doos but I cannot think of one single thing that I have tried and remained loyal to as the result of a commercial.
Most of the products that I use and remain loyal to are due to upbringing and shopping on my own.
This thought popped into my head after watching a commercial that I despise. I hate those Raisin Bran Crunch commercials. The series of commercials that feature a boss that is dissatisfied with a certain employee (Johnson) and is at a loss on how to fire the guy. It seems that every time he tries to have a discussion with Johnson he is eating this crunchy cereal and he cannot hear his boss firing him. There are about 4 or 5 commercials in this never-ending saga and I loathe them all respectively.
Did I try Raisin Bran Crunch? Yes, I did. But not because of the annoying commercial. I tried the cereal because my favorite cereal is Raisin Bran. I figured adding a little crunch to my all-time favorite cereal wouldn't be bad. It was.
On the flip side. I love a Geico commercial. Not all of them. There is one in particular. The one where a salesman is shooting a commercial and he says that switching to Geico is so easy that even a caveman could do it. The scene then cuts to an expensive restaurant and seated at the table are 2 cavemen and the salesman. The salesman is apologizing and caveman#1 tells him he should've done a little research 1st.
I love the expressions on the caveman#1 & #2 faces. I love how caveman#1 orders his expensive meal and how caveman#2 says he doesn't have much of an appetite.
Just thinking about this commercial makes me smile. Have I switched to Geico? No. I have been loyal to Nationwide Insurance partly because that is who my mother uses and partly because I have a friendly relationship with our agent. By the way, Nationwide has several commercials out. Some I hate and some I like.
So back to my original question, What is the purpose of a commercial? Companies spend billions on commercials so I know there is someone out there taking the bait.
