National Coming Out Day

Oct 12, 2008 20:07

Well, yesterday was national coming out day. Hey world! I'm not straight.

OK, so that wasn't a surprise.

BUT I wanted to talk about why I have hopes for the next several years.

I work at a community college in a rather conservative area. You would think working there I would be worried, but.... I have lots of hope.

Students are open and freer (and more secure) with their sexuality. I watched someone hit on someone with a non-compatible sexuality. They now seem to be great friends. The students are very accepting and supportive of fellow students regardless of sexuality. Most students can't even conceive why anyone would even vote for Prop 8 (I had one student who was complaining that their mother was supportive of prop 8, and apparently threatened to move out if her mom put up a "Yes on 8" yard sign. (I'm working hard to encourage all my students to make sure they go vote!)

Some day, national coming out days will be a strange foot note. Someday, coming out will not be a big deal. PFLAG will have run its course, and GLBT issues will be just part of general civil rights.

At least.... that's my hope.

In the short term.... I just hope Prop. 8 dies a miserable death on Nov. 4th. If not, I guess Jim and I are moving to Connecticut with his parents.

national coming out day, glbt rights, philosphy, prop. 8
