Marriage Equality -- in multiple forms

Jun 20, 2008 12:08

Last night, we filled out the online marriage license, and internet'd it off too the L.A. county clerk. We took a pleasant drive almost due south to the East LA county clerks office this morning, and got our license. It was a painless process. Amazingly, despite the web sites instructions to bring it along, they didn't ask to see our domestic partnership paperwork. While we were waiting an opposite-gendered couple came in to get there license. Both couples went through the process together. As the clerk was explaining the whose signature goes where bit, I discovered that the other couple had her information in the traditionally "Groom" slot, and his in the traditional "Bride" slot. With the exception of the clerk almost having them sign the wrong places, I saw an opposite-gendered couple that did not seem to be hurt by my impending marriage.

You know, I'm not nearly as nervous about marriage take two on sunday as I was about marriage take one, but I will admit to feeling a little giddy. I suppose I didn't really believe the state of California was really moving towards marriage equality -- I guess part of me would not have been surprised to hear the county clerk say "Ha Ha, got you! You are still really a second class citizen in the eyes of California." Instead the only personal comment we got from the clerk (aside form Congratulations at the end) was "My, the two of you are tall."

Our real wedding day will always be June 4 2007, but if anyone wants to attend "take two," it will be very short during regular Sunday services at Altadena Community Church at 10:00 am on Sunday June 22, 2008. The church is open and affirming and all are welcome. (Jim and I will be singing in the choir -- and it is quite a nice anthem).
