This morning my boss asked me to accompany him to a department "town hall" and for me to give a motivational speech and to focus on the things that were on my mind.
I felt pretty honored that he asked me, and he has also asked me to go to Sydney with him next week and do the same thing.
This afternoon did not go so well. Things I need to try to do differently are:
1. Try not to overtly offend people in the room. Calling "accountants" bean-counters when I am trying to motivate finance people isn't really smart.
2. Try to limit math analogies.
3. Perhaps, ask people questions rather than tell them about the really cool stuff I am doing.
4. Make sure there is beer (or wine) afterwards. Although, I think beer works better at those events.
5. Be more human
6. Prepare for the right topic beforehand. Today I thought I was supposed to speak about something different.
7. Make sure that I end with something similar to what I started with. See point 6.
That is all.
