So it ACTUALLY HAPPENED. I got to go to the movies with Vanessa! Better still, WE HAD THE WHOLE THEATER TO OURSELVES. Evidently, the final showing of Hell Fest at 4:40 in the afternoon was not a popular destination. Just as well, because we took the opportunity to snark at the movie the entire time. It was really fun, and so unlike my usual theater-going experience. Instead of an enraptured, as-close-to-opening-night-as-I-can-manage viewing of a movie I've been eagerly anticipating (and may have seen every previous sequel and installment of), this was a just-barely-making-it, empty theater, TALKING THE WHOLE TIME viewing of something that I had previously had no desire to see at all. And I loved it.
The experience, that is. The movie itself was... meh? I mean, I'm not much of a horror guy, but it seemed average to me. Vanessa successfully predicted about 80% of it along the way. But it was so great to be able to do that.
It was also great to ride along with her, since she offered to drive part of the way. And even though I would've made the entire trip for her without a second's hesitation, I was glad to accept the offer, as it gave us more time to talk -- and we ALWAYS need more time to talk. What it also did, though, was let us listen to music together for the first time, which was really great, given that we have had an ongoing exchange and discussion of our favorite songs since early 2016. And even in her dating profile, she had made mention of blasting Bohemian Rhapsody in the car, and that one image alone made me want to, someday, ride in a car with her, listening to great music. And we did. We didn't quite get up to blasting and singing along at the top of our lungs, but you gotta work up to that level of absolute comfort. Even so, we did tap along, headbang (Listening to Babymetal's "Headbaaangeeerrr!", so we HAD TO), and lowly sing along to bits -- so that's wonderful and good progress in that realm, that kind of beautiful moment of perfect suburban joy. Also, and I shouldn't be at all surprised by this, but it was so damn great to get in her truck and hear so many great songs that I know and love. Given our discussions of music, that is exactly what I should expect, and it's certainly what I hoped for -- but to have it really happen is just so fucking great.
After the movie we went to Denny's to sit and talk, and it was very little about the movie and very much about shitty sisters, writing, relationship histories, and a couple dozen other things. She even asked if I would let her read the book I've been working on -- which, yes, of course I'd love for her to read it and let me know what she thinks. And it's great to not have to just imagine what she might think of it some day, or try to shoehorn the topic into conversation in hopes that I can suggest or request that she give it a read. For her to ask me is just so much more satisfying. I just hope she actually likes it!
