Reputation:
Ree comes across to most as being a bit wrapped up in himself and those close to him. He rarely speaks to people he doesn't have to and occasionally even walks off in the middle of conversations. Some know his wife has to check regularly to see if he's eating and a couple know he makes tents in his office when he wants to stay the night. A few others might have seen the notebooks he writes his dreams in when he just wakes up, which have sentences like 'make everything cake' or 'everyone is cats now'. Generally he's viewed as brilliant but eccentric and no good with people. Which is true.
Rumours:
* He doesn't know what sex is.
* He is/his wife is/both are infertile
* He's a woman
* He has no emotions
* He steals his ideas
* He eats puppy souls for breakfast

History: Rhea's parents were expecting a girl.
They already had one, and they'd been told that the omens looked towards there being another woman born to the family. When a boy was pushed out, they had no other name available. Still, he didn't care then and he doesn't care so much now. People tutted though, told his parents that they'd make their boy feminine. He adopted the nickname "Ree" from a young age and it stuck. Far less uncomfortable than a boy being called by a girl's name.
He grew tall and clever, though never exactly masculine. He never got sick, but never ran to join other boys in playing. If he had friends in his youth, it would always be one or two desperately close friends and if they slipped out of his grip he didn't seem to notice. There are some so clever they can invent entire worlds for themselves: Ree was forever getting lost inside the mazes of his own mind.
His parents were good people, but alas, too monetarily middle class, too intellectually poor to understand the value of education as he did. A cruel assessment, but true. They expected him to enter their industry, acting, as soon as possible. While it was true, he did enjoy writing the occasional childish play for them to perform and he did find the skills picked up whilst acting useful, he desperately wanted to learn. On the eve of his fourteenth birthday he made a choice, neophyte or initiate. He flipped a coin and it came up heads: neophyte it was.
He joined as soon as he was able, working diligently to learn all that he could. After a few months he soon realised he couldn't soak up every aspect of human life and decided to focus instead on making life better for others.
Innovation was a hard slog, working out what might be a good idea and what definitely wasn't through trail and error. Almost nothing worked first time. Things had to be tinkered with, taken apart. Other people might just pip you to the post. It was the most exciting field he'd ever come across.
He worked as an assistant to an adept before he made adept himself. His hard work paid off a few months later when he improved a pair of spectacles, making them in a different grade for those who were far sighted (but not TOO farsighted). He also invented a parachute and after one broken arm and a shattered ankle improved it to the point where it was usable, if basically useless unless you liked falling off of buildings. He stuck with smaller things after that.
He became magister very recently, possible promoted due to his latest success, a more powerful microscope. Working closely with the department of healing, he's helped to map out the difference between the bone structure of a half-bird half-human Other with that of a normal human being. Always fascinated with anatomy (if not healing it) that was a particular triumph for him.
Oh, he got married somewhere down the line too. He quite likes his wife. She is very beautiful. They don't have kids but that's fine with him, as weird as other people find it. He has yet to allow the stares or rumours to affect him. He has work to do, after all.
Personality: There appears to be a deep disconnect between Ree and the rest of the world. He just looks at things differently. People are nice, but necessary? He's not sure. Certainly, he doesn't view himself as necessary. Don't get him wrong, he has no self-esteem issues. He accepts himself as a full human being. He knows he has irredeemable flaws (his relationship with other people, for example), he knows he is damn good at some things, and he knows he is average at the rest. Why be upset about your flaws? You're human. Relish in the fact that you can use them as excuses to get out of things.
He's, let's say 'quirky' because it sounds nicer than 'he has no idea how to take care of himself'. He approaches everything in his life from a scientific viewpoint, experimenting when things go wrong to search for a better outcome. He's set himself on fire twice trying to discover the perfect method for frying eggs and he's had more than one interaction where he's gotten halfway through a conversation then asked to go back to the beginning so he can try again. He loves to be loved though, and while he might learn from his mistakes quickly (his mind is incredibly agile) he'll repeat them if he thinks someone thinks they're sweet or cute.
He relies on his wife to take care of him and make sure he's still breathing/has eaten in the last twenty-four hours. Looking after himself is hard gosh. He can thank his sturdy immune system that he hasn't been made ill. Indeed, he does seem nigh indestructible. A lucky man, he's jumped out of windows in the name of science and regularly pushes his body to its limit. It's fascinating, working out the extent of the human body and how he can change it with his inventions. He rarely sleeps more than a few hours without sitting up and making notes on whatever surface is closest - his notebooks, an arm, his wife's back. Often he goes through the day with only a few hours of sleep.
In truth, Ree has very little regard for himself. This is no self-loathing, he simply doesn't consider that he is not only mortal but capable of being horribly injured or ill through his own actions. Unless he is in direct mortal danger (facing down a werewolf for example THANK YOU DUNCAN) he finds it difficult to remember that what he's doing could lead to his death. It's likely a good thing that his focus is on small sized innovations, such as lenses; were he working on things such as parachutes full time he would not have survived so long. He's loving and self-sacrificing to those close to him (his work, his wife, his closest friends) but would likely also throw himself in front of a stampeding bull to save a stranger. Though awkward with people and distant, he is definitely Chaotic Good.
Ree also has a temper. This is saved for people who really, seriously piss him off, but once tripped he retains a short fuse in regards to that person for forever. Even if they become friends after, they can expect yelling in their future.
He also does stupid shit like pull faces and play childish games like building forts in his office or writing about heroes named Ray who save everyone from danger. He looks like a grouch with his muted facial expressions, but the fact is he's just a little slow when it comes to recognising emotions. 'Grouch' is his face's neutral look, even if he's dancing a jig with happiness he won't notice for a second. And then he'll smile.
Personality Keywords:
Appearance: Ree constantly looks like he just woke up. His short dark hair is constantly tousled and his stubble is always breaking through. One day he will suck it up and just grow a beard, but the stubble is attractive enough, he supposes. Tall and gangling, he hasn't quite grown into his arms; his left is a full inch or so longer than his right and both are longer than average. His nose is beak-like, his face is square and his eyes are a clear blue.
He tends to wear neat, conservative clothing, going for his own comfort over fashion. He aims for black as often as possible, pairing it with hats and overcoats. He always looks a little cold.
When nervous or thoughtful, he touches his lips or tugs on his ear. His face looks slightly awkward or manic with any expression larger than a slight smile on it - anything else is rarely seen. When it is though, it starts slow and begins to spread across his face until he's grinning like crazy. Despite the fact that he's generally happy, these moments don't last long.
Languages Known: English, Latin, Ancient Greek.
Skills: Good with machinery, excellent eyesight, has a talent for archery though he hasn't really put much into developing it, is fairly good at working out if people are lying from examining their body language (though he can't do it without really, really examining them), good with puzzles, excellent endurance.
Strengths: widely read, very clever, will help anyone who needs it, a good ear for music and a decent singing voice, adorable, excellent grasp of theoretics. Neat. Lucky. Calm in a crisis.
Weaknesses: Cannot read people naturally, has no regard for personal safety, finds it near impossible to make friends, doesn't realise he's made friends when he's made them, holds big grudges, will do almost anything to endear himself to people he really likes, loses his temper with people he really dislikes easily. Comes across as an ice king/jerk at first. Cannot look after himself outside of his lab. Is an idiot when it comes to emotions.
