so, my health and safety certification course is over, and it's back to the office tomorrow. it's going to be a mad scramble of a day because i have to get caught up on my current project -- fortunately not customer-oriented -- i've got a meeting regarding my current project, and i have to leave a little early so i can catch the 6:35 p.m.  train to cobourg.

dp's picking me up from the train station. he left for the hill this evening, directly after the esprit concert. it's just me and the kitties tonight. of course i will let them sleep in the room with me, at least until etta decides she wants either attention or food or both and she wakes me up. then it's down to the basement with the both of them.

the esprit was a bit of a bust for me tonight. i couldn't get into the first two pieces and the last piece was just obnoxious. both dp and i agreed on that one! he liked the first two, and i hope i get the opportunity to hear them again. i noticed that the cbc wasn't taping the concert, so i'll have to wait until the orchestra decides to perform them again.

almost forgot: dn told me that one of the bands he's in -- yolassi -- is going to be in the north by northeast music fest! tres cool! i really like their music, and think they deserve some more recognition than what they have received so far.

on to the griffin poetry prize short list reading i attended it last night. mainly my intention was to hear some poetry. buying a book and reading poetry is definitely not the same thing. poetry is written to be said, not read. my secondary reason for going was to get back into the poetry "thang" and hear what's out there. i gave up going to the scream in high park a couple of years ago because i found it to be lacking in soul. it was much better before everyone else caught on to the secret. the scream was my only link to modern poetry. without it i had no frame of reference. i was surprised and extremely pleased at the huge audience that turned out for the event. the macmillan theatre was pretty much filled with a greatly assorted mass of people. i sat down near the front beside a couple who looked vaguely familiar. actually, it was the man who looked familiar, in a hume cronyn-ish way. he's probably just someone i've seen on the transit frequently. i have a habit of "recognizing" fellow ttc-ers when i see them out of context. i know i know them, but rarely do i figure out where i know them from until i see them on the subway or bus again.

i was impressed mightily by all the poets, but my favourites were:
  • durs grunbein
  • michael palmer
  • sylvia legris

michael ondaatje was there. his hair is white and thinning and he's developed a paunch, but i'm sure his words are just as potent as sexy as they always have been. i remember when i thought he was the hottest thing in canadian literature, and almost squealed at one of his readings. sorry, but poetry affects me that way...

too tired to continue, but hopefully there will be more tomorrow or saturday, or sunday or...
