deerhoof is an amazing band, they have a cute little asian female "lead singer" they play avant-tinged noisy/instrumental/rock and they came to olympia.
notes on the evening:
1-got there early, saw that this own proved to be very small in that i saw a million people that i have seen around campus.
2-hung out with kathy and during a minimalist/absurdist set by a (acoustic) guitar and cello duo i thought to myself "i want to learn how to play the bass drum, snare drum, high-hat and a synthesizer all at once" nd no shit THE VERY NEXT BAND HAD THAT SAME SET-UP! they were dancy crap (think a low-quality peaches or something, ugh) but they lived in my imagination, so it was worth suffering through. then when i went up to the drummer (who really did all the work) and congratulated him he was, get this, NICE! anyone who knows me knows i have a real problem with going to shows and meeting the band and then hating with all of my heart that band which i had just seen. NOT THIS TIME! god smiled upon me and the drumer shook my hand and encouraged me to follow my own interpertation of that set-up.
3-kathy lost her keys.
4-the lady who was running the door said "go up front, they have some keys"
5-the people who were up front were some dude and the lead singer of that aforementioned acoustic band... that "some dude" was... hold it... it's coming... SLIM MOON- OWNER OF KRS RECORDS!!!!111 and he was even nicer than the drummer guy! i swear to god i almost died, the guy whose record label put out both Bikini kill and the decemberists was a human being to me, and when i told him that he was much more aproachable than calvin is he laughed and shook my hand and was all cool.
do you know what feels like? to finally have PROOF that you are not some fucker, but a human being who happens to be a fan of an art, and have the creator (or distributor in this sense) actually treat you like a human? for a long time i have wondered what was wrong with me, why bands have always been so assinine to me despite me being there to see them and these two guys brightened my night just by being decent.
i'm smiling right now.
6-when i was in the stairwell talking to kathy about how slim moon was actually cool to me and how calvin johnson was unaproachable and ian mckaye was so-so as a person and what not, this dude got all up in my grill all askin' "what did you say about calvin johnson" "that he was unapproachable" "blah blah" "blah" he and i matched wits and discussed how i wasn't talking shit on calvin, that i was merely saying that he wasn't a very approachable fellow at the time that i met him and he left me alone. kathy looked at me and said "i finally know what you're talking about when you talk shit on the 'scene'" and i smiled again.
7-i CROWD SURFED, at an indie show! i haven't done that in years and years and years, and i did it to deerhoof. what happened was i was pushed onto the tiny stage and then actually pulled back. i was passed around for a bit and then dismounted right in front of kathy, it was all very meant to be.
this was one of the best experiences at a show, ever, people were decent and the confrontations were minimal (of course, there were confrontations, but those i will save for another day) for now, though, i am going to go to bed with a smile on my face, a warm feeling in my heart, and a beautiful girl who understands me at my side.
i love you world, even though we beat up on each other when we're angry sometimes, i love you.
