another adieu

I stopped for a moment and let the baubles tumble out, those gaudy silver and gold pieces that filled both of the pockets beneath my sternum. After choking for so long on those remaining tokens of friendship, I felt justified in inhaling just deeply enough to savor the sharp taste of emptiness on the back of my throat before suffocating once more on some newer, less tarnished, trinkets.
