Would someone like to tell me why nice guys get really controlling, jealous, bitch-face girlfriends?

Synposis - I had plans to hang out with a friend that I used to work with and haven't seen in a while. I call him several times for directions as I don't know where his new place is. I wait for a return phone call. I assume that something has come up, as it usually does, and do my thing. I try one last time and get this girl who is extremely rude to me. Amongst other things she says, "Well this is his girlfriend and he's with me tonight!"
