From the USA seven's team blog comes this gem - "14 Resolutions to a Better Rugby Player", by Jess. My favorite is number 3!
As the last few days of 2008 pass us by, it’s a perfect time to reflect on what we’ve learned and start thinking about what we want to accomplish in 2009. I did a quick Google search to find out what the top New Years resolutions in America are, and found that for rugby players, they mean something a little bit different. Here are the top resolutions for 2009 and the translations that I’ve learned in 2008 for how to accomplish them in/ what they mean for rugby.
1. Spend more time with family and friends.
Rugby translation: Spend more time with teammates.
2. Get fit.
Rugby translation: Score 10 100s on fitness testing.
3. Lose weight.
Rugby translation: Gain weight.
4. Quit smoking.
Rugby translation: …Quit smoking.
5. Enjoy life more.
Rugby translation: Play more rugby!
6. Quit drinking.
Rugby translation: Don’t drink before training or playing- you’ll regret it.
7. Get out of debt.
Rugby translation: Sell more calendars. (Help us with our New Years resolutions and buy a calendar!)
8. Learn something new.
Rugby translation: Pay more attention when Jules is explaining something.
9. Help others/ volunteer.
Rugby translation: Work on your passing, and play for your teammates.
10. Get organized.
Rugby translation: Make sure you know the plays.
11. Get a better job.
Rugby translation: Don’t tell your boss you play rugby and that you’re going to have to take a 3 week leave of absence.
12. Get a better education.
Rugby translation: Take the semester off so you can focus on rugby.
13. Eat right.
Rugby translation: Eat more. (But also eat right. Talk to Jen Sinkler about nutrition, not me.)
14. Reduce stress.
Rugby translation: Play more rugby! (Notice a pattern yet?)
Happy New Year, and I hope you keep all your resolutions in 2009!
