Chapter 4

Friday came at last, and it’s the final day that Sir Lee has to teach our dear Taemin for the week. Two weeks felt too long since they started this tutoring blasphemy and things are doing quite “well”. Both adults have stopped talking to each other to avoid anymore useless nagging and quarreling. The pink aura that they have experienced the first time Jinki went to their house was all too disturbing. Taemin doesn’t mind, ‘cause he thinks that he’ll get used to it soon. And he thinks that it's the only way for the weird colored auras to top appearing. But that was just his opinion.

Well actually, the silence killed them all. It was too quiet that even a single movement would make a sound of an explosion. And being one of the most talkative individuals in the all of Korea, Kibum couldn't contain it. The eerie silence was making him hyperventilate. He had to break it. NOW.

“Taemin could you please pass the salt?” Kibum awkwardly said. It was the most common sentence he could thought of the moment and he didn't even need the condiment. His poor mouth just needed to spill something out.

“So, how’s school Taemin? How’s you and your new friend?” He continued to ask.

“School’s doing well. Grades are fine… Friends are the same. He’s still one.” Taemin answered pertaining to his close friend Mir.

“You know when I was in high school I used to be so popular.” His dad shared. And when Kibum says the words 'you know', it meant that his preaching mouth is ready to fire like a machine-gun. “My friends and I used to do pranks on girls while they’re looking at the mirror inside the washroom. We would attach a string to the door then bang it close. The girls would scream and cry, shouting that they’ve seen a ghost!” He laughed by himself. Jinki continued to munch his food, thinking how ridiculous the other spent his high school days.

“How about you Sir Lee?” Taemin asked. Jinki sighed and put down his fork.

“I lived normally when I was young. Had high grades, followed school rules, avoided being late or absent in every class, no offenses, not quite a number of friends, not so much happy memories with them… The usual stuff.” Kibum chocked on his food. Those things weren't the usual things that a normal student would do.

“Taemin, I think you should change a bit. I don’t want you to live like him in the future.” He meant it as a joke, but Mr. know-it-all just didn't know the concepts of having a good laugh.

“Well at least I am living a good life right now. Unlike you who had a child at a very young age. Now living alone ‘cause his wife cheated on him. And having to deal with raising a child with so many other responsibilities to think about. Have they taught you nothing good in school Mr. Kim?”

Taemin griped his utensils. He shouldn't have asked and he remembered that he told Mr. Lee that the issue about his mom was a sensitive topic. He suddenly jumped on his seat when suddenly his dad pounded his fork and the table. The other looked really angry.

“I meant it as a joke. Haven't you heard of jokes Sir Lee? You have to keep in mind that you don’t have the right to tell me those offensive things. For your information I am living happily with Taemin with or without my wife. And you being so rude to your student’s parent, haven’t they taught you anything at teaching school? You’ve already crossed the line Mr. Lee Jinki.” Kibum’s eyes were brimming with tears as he said the sentence. He watched as the teacher bit his lower lip.

“Taemin, go to your room now. Take your damn disrespectful teacher with you.” Kibum furiously said as he stood up from his seat and cleaned out the table, even though they weren’t finished eating.

Taemin slowly stood up from his seat. It was his first time seeing his father like that and he was so scared. It was like triggering a part of his dad that wasn’t meant to be provoked. He patted his teacher’s shoulder and led the way back to the bedroom.

Jinki couldn’t concentrate through the rest of the night. He had to admit, he really did cross the line. He didn’t have the permission to offend Kibum. He really felt guilty.

It was already 8:30pm when Jinki let Taemin answer a short quiz that he prepared. He looked at the back of the door, wondering if Kibum was still mad at him. 15 minutes had already passed but he was still preoccupied with what was happening behind the closed door. He looked to his right and found Taemin already snoring lightly. Jinki smiled a little. He must be so tired already. The student deserved the sleep. It was Jinki's first time to see a student work so hard as Taemin. Their session would end at 9pm anyway, so he’ll just let him sleep.

He carried Taemin and placed him carefully on his bed, tucked him in his blankets, and said his soft goodnight. He closed the lamp, picked up his bag and went out of the room.

He found Kibum cleaning the kitchen counter when he reached the hallway. The other looked at him with his lips in a straight line and his eyes cold as ice. He was definitely still pissed about what happened a while ago.

“Taemin fell asleep. I already tucked him on his bed.” Jinki managed to say. Kibum only nodded at him and it was a sign that Jinki had to get out of the house. But the teacher stayed at his spot and fidgeted with his shirt.

“About what happened-“

“You can go home now. Just come back here for your next session on Monday.” Kibum had cut him. Even the way he spat out his words were still brimming with anger.

“Mister Kim… I want to say sorry. I admit that I’ve said too much a while ago and I should have been aware of my authorization. I want to make it up to you.” Jinki pleaded. At this point, the other stopped wiping the counter and looked up to the teacher with a surprised look.

“How about I treat you to dinner tomorrow?” Jinki didn’t know how but the words just slipped on his mouth. The sudden realization of his absurd statement made him more fidgety. Something on the way the father had stared at him made him feel warm again.

“I mean it’s just like a parent-teacher dinner meeting. Not like it’s date or something. Ummm… I don't mean that I wouldn't want to date yo-...What I mean was tha-“ His words were cut once more.

“I get you. And I’ll accept your offer. How does 8pm sound like?” Jinki noticed the little smile that was now plastered on Kibum’s face. Thank goodness, he can breathe a little.

“8pm sounds great. And I promise that this will be an argument-free date- I mean dinner! I’ll meet you at the Casablanca restaurant just a few blocks away?” Kibum nodded at the teacher’s question and Jinki beamed a smile.

“Okay… Then I’ll meet you tomorrow then. Goodnight.” With that, Jinki skipped happily out of the Kim’s residences. Kibum grinned, seeing the flustered teacher a while ago lightened up his mood. He looked really cute. He thought.

Saturday came fast and day time flied so quickly that when Jinki read his watch, it was already 6pm. He needs to get ready soon or else he’d be late. He fixed his glasses and coat in front of the mirror while his friend Taecyeon observed him from behind.

“So who’s the hot chick you’re dating tonight?” Taecyeon asked.

“It’s not a chick okay. I’ll be meeting a guy. It’s a formal parent-teacher meeting.” Jinki answered busily but the latter smiled cheekily at him.

“If that's the case, then why do you keep fixing your clothes and hair? Usually you don't put wax or gel on your hair when you have a school affair. You must be attracted to this parent then. And if you’re going on a date with hot parent, might as well wear something manlier!” Taecyeon smirked before pulling Jinki with him towards the closet. “Woah! Wait! WHAT ARE YOU DOIIIIIIIIIIING?!?!?! STOP TOUCHING MEEEEEEE!!!!!” Jinki yelled.

Taemin puffed for air. He had thought about this since yesterday. He decided that he will continue going to Choi Minho's house for the tutoring. Everything felt surreal when he was close to him because he never would have thought of having a popular friend. But he was still scared of what the others may think, and scared about the fact that he might discover soon that Minho was really just using him. He went inside the room and was surprised when he saw his father all dressed-up/

“Are you going out dad?” He asked as he watched his father apply his perfume. Kibum nodded and placed his final touches. He turned around and presented himself with his arms stretched out to the side in a fashionable manner.

“How do I look?” He asked nervously. His son showed 2 thumbs up and smiled.

“Who are you meeting?”

“Your chemistry teacher.” Taemin choked on his saliva and looked at his father in disbelief.

“You can’t go! I refuse to! You can’t start WWIII! Cancel your dinner with him! I don't want to die soon! I haven't even kept enough survival food!”

“Don’t be ridiculous Taemin. This is just a simple dinner and I promise you that nothing will go wrong this time. We both promised that this meeting has a 'quarelling ban'.” Kibum smiled but looked surprised to see his son dressed up as well.

“Are you going somewhere too?”

“Yeah. Do you remember when I told you that I’ll be helping my friend in math?” Taemin answered and Kibum got reminded of the fact that his son was “dating” (as he loved to say) his schoolmate. He smiled cheekily to himself. He then looked at his watch and it read 7:45pm. He gasped and quickly grabbed his bag.

“I’ll be home by 10pm. Don’t forget your keys okay? Take care and don’t talk to strangers.” He quickly reminded before zooming out of the house. His son laughed at him. Normally, his dad wouldn’t be this fussy over a friendly dinner out.

Jinki arrived at the restaurant 10 minutes earlier. He played with the utensils in front of him and fidgeted on his seat before fiddling his hair again. He cursed himself for letting Taecyeon help him choose more fashionable clothes. After a while, his attention was caught when someone had entered the restaurant and asked the waiter for a reservation.

It was Kibum. The teacher marveled at how the other looked like. He was wearing a gray knitted sweater and under it was a simple brown shirt. It was so simple but Jinki had to admit that he looked smashing. Jinki had a question especially for you. Ever believed in love at first sight? Because before the strict teacher didn’t believed in any of it since science couldn’t explain how it was true. He found love such an odd looking compound inside people's subconscious. How many moles did love actually have? 6. 02 x 10 raised to 23 molecules of Love? What was its molecular mass? Chemistry couldn’t explain how an individual could easily be attract to another, let alone another of his kind, a male. But tonight, it seemed like his theories were scratched out.

He didn’t notice it but Kibum was already seated, waving his hand in front of his face.

“Sir Lee?” The parent kept waving. Jinki shook his head and smiled awkwardly.

“Good evening.” He managed to greet. Kibum just smiled at him back before thanking the waiter for handing the menu.

“Should we order?” The other asked and the dumfounded teacher nodded. After saying their orders, they looked at each other. Now finally they were all alone.

“You look amazing tonight.” Jinki blurted out, and the latter put down his head in embarrassment.

“Thank you. You look great too. I’ve never imagined that you would look stylish for once.” He joked. Jinki fidgeted with his clothes for the nth time that night and bashfully smiled.

“My friend insisted me to wear this.”

The night went very good for the both of them. They just kept talking about their lives and other stuff that was in their heads. A lot of topics came up, and they knew each other more. Jinki was more interesting than Kibum had thought. The teacher was very caring, light-minded, simple, and surprisingly funny. There was not a second that his smile faltered. It was a long night and he wants to make use of his time with Jinki wisely.

“So you have to transpose 3 to the other side to get the sum. Then divide both sides by 4. And that’s how you get x= 5. Do you get it?” Taemin explained to Minho. The other scrunched his forehead, but after a while a smile slowly crept on his face.

“This is it? I never realized that it was so easy! I swear that you teach better than Ms. Jung! I'm glad that you're here!” Minho cheered and concentrated more on solving the next problem. Taemin just stared at him. All of the other's statement disturbed him to be honest. Was Minho that outspoken?

“Are you only being friends with me just so you can use me?” He suddenly blurted out making Minho look up from his notebook.

“What?” He looked surprised.

“You’re only using me right? So that I can help you. After you pass math, you’ll discard me like the others. I’ll be useless. And you'll just talk to me again when you need help with another subject.” Taemin explained, his eyes starting to water.

“What are you talking about Taemin? You really think I’m using you?”

“But isn’t it true?”

“Where did you get this information anyway?!”

“But you’re so popular, and I’m just a regular student. Usually popular guys only hang out with other popular people. And they use the other students for their advantage.”

“I’m not like them Taemin… You have to trust me. I won't hurt you.” Minho cooed before wiping a tear that finally escaped the latter's eye.

“I’m sorry for asking. It’s just that, I don’t have much friends. I'm not good with socializing with other people. And I’m afraid.” Taemin suddenly felt warm. Minho was hugging him now. It felt so nice. Being wrapped around the other's arms was like being in a blanket of security.

“I really want to be friends with you. That’s the truth.” Minho whispered. The other could only nod at him and sigh. He was happy. At least now, his worries were gone, and this wasn't a dream.

After what seemed like forever, Jinki frowned at the thought that it was already late. And they needed to go home. What was supposed to be a professional dinner for a teacher and a father became a dinner for two special friends.

“I’ll walk you home.” Jinki Insisted after they got out of the restaurant but Kibum kept refusing.

“No! It’s already late. You have to get home too. I’ll be fine on my own.” But later he found himself walking home, with Jinki beside him. They were strolling down the streets, big smiles still on their faces. What happened tonight felt too good to be true. Both of them didn't expect the dinner to be filled with so much delight. It was like all their arguments turned into dust, and now they’re trying to build a new plant.

Jinki looked to his side and observed Kibum’s profile. He was more attractive up close was what the chemistry teacher kept thinking. The latter suddenly felt like he was being watched and he looked back at Jinki.

“What are you looking at? Do I have something on my face?!” He exclaimed and Jinki shook his head once again, then apologized while trying to keep the cheesy smile on his face. They had wished they could walk longer but soon they arrived in front of Kibum’s building. He turned around to face the chemistry teacher and showed his gratitude.

“Thank you for tonight. I really enjoyed it. We should do this more often.” He sweetly said.

“You’re welcome and we really should. Soooo… I’ll see you on Monday?” Jinki grinned and the other answered with a shy ‘yes’ before turning around to go inside.

“Goodnight Mr. Kim!” Jinki shouted enough for the other to hear. Kibum once again turned around to face him and shouted back.

“Goodnight too. And call me Kibum. Kibum is my name.” He turned around again and hurried his way down the lobby. Jinki continued to grin. Tonight was a good night indeed.

The next Monday, Jinki walked happily towards his first morning class as he greeted a ‘good morning’ to everyone he passed. He was such in a good mood today. Still having a happy hang-over from the delightful dinner he had with Kibum 2 nights ago.

“Good morning class of 3B!” He greeted his students and they all looked weirdly at him. “Today, I was planning to give you a quiz about reagents but I decided not to… You see, we’ve been having quizzes ever since the first day of our meeting. Let’s just have fun learning chemistry for today shall we?” He continued. The students kept looking at him in disbelief. They all thought of the same thing.

What foul wizardry has possessed our chemistry teacher? Not that they were complaining.

A student raised his hand and Jinki called out for his name.

“Sir… Are you feeling okay? You seem to be in such a good mood.” The student stuttered.

“Maybe he’s in love!” Another student yelled then the class cheered and teased him. They looked too happy and relaxed already.

“Mr. Lee Joon… Detention later okay?” Jinki just replied with that, making the class laugh out loud. Then he started with his lecture.

“Okay… So we shall start our discussion about Group7A of the periodic table. They consist of Halogens which are very reactive…” The chemistry teacher kept on talking about his lecture, but his minds was elsewhere.

Maybe he’s in love! That sentence kept ringing in his head. But yeah… Maybe he was really in love. But he had no idea of how to validate this alien feeling called love.
