nausea

I just went to the mall and had a small panic attack. It was mostly in my head and I just felt a little freaked out by the boundless consumerism that prevails there. Abercrombie and Fitch is what set it off. I know, big surprise. There was a poster in the dressing room that had two sides to it: one was a picture of a girl's ass in jeans and underneath it said something like, "Every curve designed to make you look undeniably sexy", then the other side had a picture of a guy's crotch in jeans and it was pretty obvious that the guy had at least a semi-erection (that was pointed sort of towards the girl's ass). The caption said, "Proof that every line accentuates what is important" (or something to that extent). I know that objectification of people is pretty common, but this was more like objectification of sex. I don't know why exactly I was so shocked by this. And the "funny shirts" that place men and women into these roles that they probably don't even relate to, it's just awful. Gah, I wish I was writing this more eloquently... The guy's shirts perperuate the stereotype of the asshole guy, which they're not. Some are, but not all. "I don't spoon *picture of a fork*"... "Buck Buddy"... "Friend with Privileges"... and for girls: "Blonde with brains"... "If you're rich, I'm single"... "Blondes have more fun, brunettes can read"...
Teenage girls grow up wanting to fit into that image and guys grow up feeling like they're losers if they don't treat girls that way. It's just wrong, especially since they sell this to impressionable middle and high school kids.
This leads to unhappy relationships, which lead to unhappy marriages, empty, unhappy people who don't know what they want but always feel like they want more. Unhappy marriages lead to divorce which produces unhappy kids who know nothing else. They grow up, become depressed because they can't connect to people, then they go to their doctor who prescribes them Prozac... and this is how our economy is sustained year after year, and it makes me sick.
