In the news...

Anyone heard about this Chinese student at Duke? News&Observer article.  That's really rough, considering what she's probably had to go through just to get in the States.  And the bio under her picture said she's here on full scholarship (at Duke! sheesh...).  A few things in th article made me laugh though, like when they describe her as "slight with long hair, bangs and a ready laugh."  I'm sorry, but that description fits just about every Asian female.  Hell, my mother fits that, especially on a good day.  And her reading list is Awesome.  I'm not sure I could read all of Mill's "On Liberty", but the excerpt I read for WRRD sounded like something she'd agree with.  It's really sad though.  That's the point of democracy, where you're allowed to speak your mind.  People can judge you, but they do so reasonably and maturely, not by threatening your parents.  And Duke has roughly 1/3 of all the Chinese student in North Carolina.  I'm guessing the rest are at Chapel Hill. : )

Her grass-roots democracy class sounds rather interesting.  I don't think it's possible for nations today to really educate all their citizens to make logical decisions about government, but it's worth a try.  Except that country where you're required to vote, or they'll fine you.  But it's one of the really small northern European countries, where population levels are small enough to manage.  Sometimes I really think humans should just go back to wherever we were before we discovered fire.  We mess with the environment too much, dumping in toxins and trying to keep certain species living.  Last time I checked, the extinction of species is just a part of evolution.  But then, we can't tell which ones are dying off because of us or naturally.  I think I've been watching too many National Geographic specials like CIA Secret Experiments and reading articles about disappearing narwhals.  But I really don't like humans...  we suck on so many levels.

And I feel like NCSSM should care about the narwhals.  I mean, it's the basis of our mascot, and we're educated enough to realize we can at least try to do something.  Instead, our entire school's pet issue is Darfur.  Yes, it really is horrible, but there are other issues too!
