Spring Break WOOO

Mar 10, 2009 00:55

So I'm in Oakland visiting friends from last year. It's pretty great so far, but that's what I expected given how awesome my living situation was last year. There are some major differences to be sure, not least of which is that the two guys have work during the day. But it's awesome anyway.

During the day I should be working on my thesis, but instead I'm setting up FIG's new production server. I've gotten Apache, SSL, MySQL, and mail up and running, and migrated over phpBB and MediaWiki from the other server (the latter of which was a bitch.)

I also installed Drupal in my own private webspace on the server and started building a personal website. Though, seeing as how I can't think of much use for a personal website, I'll probably try to develop a service that multiple people can use. I'm very impressed with Drupal as a content management system. It's very customizable right off the bat, but also fairly easy to mod once you get under the hood. I'll share it with you guys once it's a little more developed.

There was a snowstorm a week ago and I saw no fewer than five re-creations of Calvin and Hobbes snowmen around campus, including the one I use as my avatar. One was holding a "Spring is Coming" sign outside the Dining Center, and another was a snow goon. Fantastic.
