MIX: ATLEAST IT WOULD SEEM THAT WE DON'T

Oct 15, 2009 20:59

A fanmix forderryere's fantastic Merlin/Arthur story, atleast it would seem that we don't. And a huge thank you to her for letting me do this. :) Individual songs available, just ask! There are of course, hundreds of other songs that could have fit, but these were the ones I liked best. And they (hopefully) flow well in the order they were arranged into.

Note: Excerpts of story in italics, to put the songs into perspective. Ignore them if you don't want it spoiled for you.

1.
[Merlin sets his jaw, staring at the floor. He mumbles, "You won't talk to me at school anyway," and then looks away.
"Well--you just, I've got different friends and all, from football, and you . . . " He shrugs, glancing up at Merlin. "Are you--Merlin, are you crying?"
"No," Merlin says, roughly rubbing at his face with the back of his sleeve.]

DON'T LET THEM SEE YOU CRY - MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA

Don't let them see you cry
When the dam breaks down and the city is covered in water

2.
["-something happened that summer, Merlin? Did you have a fight? You sounded so close over the phone, I really thought you'd finally-"
"Mum," he interrupts, voice thick and breaking. "Mum, please. Please. No."]

WORLD SPINS MADLY ON - THE WEEPIES

Woke up and wished that I was dead
With an aching in my head I lay motionless in bed
Thought of you and where you'd gone

3.
[Arthur, who was always so quick with any answer of any kind, not known for passing up a chance to make fun of the other side of their little family, remained uncharacteristically quiet for a long time.]

THE LONGER I RUN - PETER BRADLEY ADAMS

And when I hear the sound of the black bird's cry
I know I left in the nick of time
...
So let me ride the wind till I don't look back
and forget the life that I almost had.

4.
["Gwen," she'd said, "this is Merlin. Merlin-Gwen. And . . . well, Arthur, I suppose?"
Merlin, to his credit, didn't so much as bat a lash as he extended his hand from Gwen to Arthur, giving a tight smile and saying,
"Nice to meet you."]

YOUR EX-LOVER IS DEAD - STARS

Smiled and said, 'yes I think we've met before'
In that instant it started to pour
Live through this
and you won't look back

5.
["So," he calls toward the kitchen, the easiness he tries for disappearing in the tightness of his words as he adds, "Where-is she, anyway?"
Merlin pours himself a glass of water. "Gone," he says after a healthy swig. "On a time/space vacation, ha."]

MY OWN WORST ENEMY - LIT

Came in through window last night
and you're gone

6.
[For a week, for a very long, brilliant week, it's like what it was always supposed to be. Like what it would've been if Arthur hadn't gone with his father, just summer and his mother and brother, eating cooked meals and watching TV and playing rugby in the park down the road.]

WE INTERTWINED - THE HUSH SOUND

Like vines we intertwined
Carelessly growing up and growing old
Life was on our tongues
And it tasted heavenly so good

7.
["Yeah," Arthur says. "Yeah, I . . . " He sighs, briefly closes his eyes, and finishes with, "I should probably get back to Sophie, too."
"Yes," Merlin agrees, quietly, and Arthur can see the accompanying nod out of the corner of his eye.]

BLUE SKIES - NOAH AND THE WHALE

Cause it's time to leave
Those feelings behind
Oh cause blue skies are calling
But I know that it's hard

8.
[The next morning on waking up and finding her gone, Arthur spends a half hour flicking a pizza box open and then closed, half-heartedly waiting for her to come back. And then, on realising that's not going to happen, he closes his eyes and bangs his head against the table-wishing he could feel more sorry than stupid.]

EYESORE - MARIA MENA

I want out from under
This confining skin
That I so reluctantly live in.

9.
[Arthur smiles at his dinner, and waits for the night to be over.]

PROTONS, NEUTRONS, ELECTRONS - THE CAT EMPIRE

I've changed and changed,
And changed and changed
From one thing to another.
I've had complicated dealings
With complicated feelings
And I've cut and bruised and torn.

10.
["All right. Okay." Arthur jogs down the few steps, passing Merlin with an airy, "Come on, then," as he sets toward his car, parked just a little while down the street. Merlin sits for a short moment longer, glances back at the building as well, then gets to his feet-follows Arthur.]

LOVE SONG TO REMEMBER - JAMIE SCOTT AND THE TOWN

I'm seeing things I can't see
I'm hearing you if I believe
I don't know how to love you baby

11.
[They drive off toward the coast with blurry minds that slowly, very slowly clear up the closer the sea comes into view-the bleary frowns gradually replaced by identically stupid grins.]

EVERYTHING'S RIGHT - MATT WERTZ

Windows down as the night blows in
Tap the beat on the wheel as the tires spin
Until we're there crank the radio
We'll join in with the songs we know

12.
[Merlin loves it. Arthur complains most of the time.]

LIFE LESS ORDINARY - CARBON LEAF

Well I hate to be a bother,
But it's you and there's no other
I do believe
