Chapter 9

On the ambulance ride Justin kept to his promise to behave and let the paramedics look over him, although his eyes kept flickering back and forth in a way that Brian knew signified that Justin was annoyed. He always did that in an attempt to reign in his irritation so as not to snap out, and Brian was pleased to see that he was no longer acting on his impulses to just hit out at anyone that hurt him.

When they got to the hospital, Brian was forced to stay back in the waiting area, and it was fair to say that at this point Justin thought he had behaved enough, and now it was time to act up.

“Brian, please, I want you to come with me!” He whimpered pathetically, hanging on to Brian’s hand and not letting go, even when the attending doctor tried to pry his hand away.

“Justin, you know damn well that I can’t come back there with you.” Brian replied, stroking Justin’s hand, his soothing tone belying his sharp words.

He wanted to go back there with Justin, he truly did, but he knew hospital regulations well enough, and he knew that the nurses and doctor’s were not ones to back down over them.

Speaking of doctors, the one attending to Justin now leant down to the boy and tried to reason with him while another nurse bustled around the boy.

“Justin please, Mr. Kinney can be with you after we get you checked out and settled in a bed.” He reasoned, his tone low and coaxing.

Justin shook his head tearfully, eyes wide with panic at the thought of them separating him from the other man.

“But why can’t he stay with me?” He choked out, and the doctor’s face softened as he heard real distress and lack of understanding in that voice. Within his first year working at the hospital, the doctor had learnt which patients were protesting just to be awkward because they were pissed off and wanted somebody to take it out on, and which ones were protesting because they were genuinely distressed and couldn’t understand why certain things had to be done.

He could safely say that Justin belonged to the latter group.

“Because we can’t let anyone through who is not immediate family - it’s too risky, and there are legal complications. We don’t want to get shut down just because we let someone through who we shouldn’t have.” The doctor tried to explain gently, although even to his ears it sounded vague. But he couldn’t stand here and give the boy chapter and verse as to why his companion could not go with him. The boy needed medical attention, not a lecture. He could see the young man going white and start to tremble ever so slightly, and knew that it was time to treat the boy.

He nodded to the nurse to start wheeling the gurney through.

“Alright, move it along to the ward now.” He murmured quietly.

Justin’s eyes widened in shock and panic as he realised that he was being taken away.

He reached out desperately to Brian, wanting nothing more than to just go home with the older man.

“No! Brian, don’t let them! NO!” Justin screamed, struggling to sit up and fighting for all he was worth against the doctor who was trying to keep him on the gurney.

“Come on Justin, calm down, Brian will see you later.” The doctor almost panted through his efforts to keep Justin still.

“NO! I want him to come with me, please! Brian!” Justin wailed, scratching and tearing at the doctor’s coat in his effort to get away.

Brian had tried to keep his distance so he could let the doctors do their jobs without hindrance, but now he just could not stand back and simply watch this. He moved forward to clasp Justin’s hand and stroke his pale and sweaty face.

Justin immediately quieted, burrowing close to Brian, his breathing slowing down as he began to come down from his hysteria.

Brian turned to the doctor.

“Look, I’ve tried to stay out of your way so you can do your job, but it seems to me to be kind of counter productive, as he’s getting so fucking worked up about it that it’s got to be causing more damage, can’t you see that?!” He hissed, narrowing his eyes at the doctor.

The professional sighed as he looked at the trembling, sick boy that clung to the brunette, and his decision although grudgingly made, was never the less quickly made.

“Alright.” he sighed, turning to the nurse, taking a deep breath to begin the speech that was part of protocol.

“For the record, I am allowing a non family member into the treatment room with Mr. Taylor because I believe it would be counter productive to our attempts to improve Mr. Taylor’s health if we continue to distress him by separating him from his companion.”

Brian smiled and leaned down to the now more relaxed Justin, and murmured, “See, you’ve got your way now, brat. Happy?”

Justin returned the smile, though it was somewhat pained.

“Yeah, I’m happy.”
