http://www.deviantart.com gets the treatment

Has anyone else noticed the phenomenon of Deviant Art icons? I could write a damn thesis on the things.

Warning: Celebros' dumb brand of logic applies from this point forward.

They're like little advertisements/statements of individuality. If you only had 50x50 pixels to give everyone a nudge in your direction, what would you put on it? Some of them are major works of art, some of them make me laugh, and some of them just plain suck. The most effective ones are, of course, those done by the best artists (who presumably have the best sense of design, too). Therefore it's a big let-down when a really great artist has a shoddy icon and you know they're better than that. What else can you judge them by? Their name? Ferget it, bud. Who can tell anyone's name from anyone else in the world of DA? Half of them end in 'chan' or numbers.

If you've nicked your icon from something else, another picture that I recognise (not some other DA artist's art, because I won't notice that) you automatically suck. Unless you've done something to it to make it witty. Then you un-suck, but since you have to make statements rather than showing off your art, you probably suck anyway.

Also, there's nothing like writing to judge a person by like on LiveJournal. You can get caught on the swing by LJ users because you stumble over their writing or witty comments somewhere, but with DA since a good part of the clientelle is more than slightly illiterate (and it doesn't matter anyway, because you're there for art), you can't tell and have to look at the icon. And quite frankly if your icons sucks, I'll assume you do too. Sorry guys.

DA icons, then, are 250 pixels of PURE SELF-WHORING. Nice.
