The Cimolestes is a primitive, insectivore-like mammal. It lived through the late Cretaceous period, this being the late Mesozoic era. This animal looked like a tree shrew. It lived high in trees, gripping into the branches with its long nails. This animal, ate insects. Being a mammal, it drunk its mothers milk as a cub. Little is known about the Cimolestes. It was hunted by bigger land carnivores, while still alive, some kinds of dinosaurs hunted it. But its defense was living in the trees, away from trouble. The many times it had to come down to the ground were the times it was in most peril. This animal gave rise to the whole cat family, though it looked nothing like a cat. It started evolving mostly as mutation happened through out the years. The biggest change however was a dramatic change in the weather. It became dry and the trees slowly disappeared. The animal had to adapt to become a land animal. Though some still lived in trees in other parts of the world. Resulting in the many arboreal cats in the wild today. However the land species did not survive, for it had no protection against predators, resulting in the extinction of those species. So the species who survived continued to grow in Europe, still arboreal.

The Proailurus is considered the first true feline animal. It lived in the Tertiary Period, this being the Cenozoic era. This feline looked very much like most felines look today, long legs ans tail, large eyes and sharp claws and teeth. Its fur coat was short. It was spotted and stripped in many shapes. This feline lived in trees, like its common ancestor. It was found mostly in Europe, where the majority of the Cimolestes survived. The Proailurus was a carnivore, that meant it hunted and fed off of meat. Its greatest enemy was the Brontotherium, in which, though a herbivore, was very aggressive. The Proailuruses were considered the kings of the jungle than, because like lions these days, they were not hunted by any other animals. (Though lions are hunted illegally by humans today in parts of the world). The Proailurus gave rise to Dinofelis and Machairodus, which are other late Tertiary Period felines. As pray evolved to protect itself from these predators, they had to naturally evolve with them to help themselves to survive. This resulted in the early Saber-Toothed Cats (like the tiger) With bigger teeth and legs, for better hunting strategies.

The domestic cat is a small carnivorous mammal, just like its ancestors. Its been valued by humans for the last 9.500 years. But it all started in Egypt, with the mythical cat Bast. It was considered protector of the home. The “goddess” of the home. Mostly because it is able to hunt vermin, like mice which infested the Egyptian's fields and homes. She was the daughter of the sun god Ra and very important in Egyptian religion. Since then, domestic cats have been kept by humans for companion. Like big cats, these cats are very effective predators. They ambush and immobilize pray by pouncing, then bite their necks with their long canines, a fatal blow to the spinal cord. However domestic cats like to hunt and eat invertebrates as well, like insects. Domestic cats are hunted by larger mammals, which are various, like the dog. Cats live in the present era and period, The Cenozoic era and Quaternary period. The wild cat, its ancestor is believed to have evolved in a desert climate, them being the domestic cats ancestors passed on their traits. Cats are able to withstand hot and cold temperatures of a temperate climate (like the cold desert nights and hot days for the wild cat) but not for very long. They prefer warm areas, sleeping in a sunny spot in the heat of the day

---evolution
Natural selection is when favorable traits that are heritable become more common in generations that follow in a certain environment and are more favorable in their gene pool. Genetic drift occurs when a single gene pool is separated so that they cannot interact with each other, throughout the years they each adapt to their own environment and change from one another. This is like geographic isolation. Domestic cats evolved in many way through out the family tree, however they all evolved from the common ancestor “Cimolestes” Which lived in threes throughout the worst except the poles and Australia, different climates resulted in speciation. Thats why there are so many different kinds of cats today. The Proailurus, evolved through natural selection. Because it was a carnivore and a hunter it had to adapt with its surroundings. Eventually the ones with larger canines survived and passed out their traits forward, like the Saber-Toothed Cats which had large sabers which where good for hunting and even utilized in other things such a moving fallen trees (which was common where they lived) that being another example of natural selection, only the ones with large strong sabers survived. Cats in the desert part of the world became adapted to the weather, they where able to withstand extreme heat and cold and long periods of time without water. Cats which evoluted in different parts of the world became adapted to temperate weather or hot weather, like the climate in North Africa, where lots of big cats live these days.
