Summary: Saying goodbye can be heartbreaking
There was nothing left for her in this place anymore, but for some reason Elizabeth could not bring herself to leave.
She was sitting in an empty classroom that the science teacher had forgotten to lock, again, thinking about how this place had been her only real safe haven for the past thirteen years.
Elizabeth started school here when she was five. On her first day it had seemed so massive, a place where kids from five to eighteen all blended together. Now it seemed impossible that this place could possibly of ever held so much.
Elizabeth was still in her cap and gown, staring down at the temporary diploma the dean had handed her not thirty minutes early and she felt the tears that streaked down her face. How was she supposed to say goodbye to a place she viewed more as her home then her real home. How do you say goodbye to a place you had grownup your entire life in.
In the distance she heard people laughing and celebrating. Elizabeth couldn't understand how they could possibly be so thrilled to leave this comforting place behind.
She wiped her face and slowly stood up and gathered her diploma as she went. She stopped at the door as though it was the last room she would ever exit and leaned her forehead against the frame in a silent goodbye. With that she plastered on a smile and walked out, trying not to look back at the life she was leaving behind.
