I was out grocery shopping and had one of those blast from the past musical experiences.
"The Freshmen" by The Verve Pipe was on the radio, and I had to just sit in the car and sing along until it was over. The wash of memories that comes with that song- Respect Day, in high school, skipping class in those classes where the teachers wouldn't let us go, to enter into the crowded library and listen to the music, the discussions about the song at lunch and free periods in the library, picking apart the lyrics, trying to figure out what it means. (I still hold that although the lyrics may be "For the life of me, I cannot believe we'd ever doubt forty cents, we were merely freshmen," at the beginning of the song, that the last repetition changes it to "I cannot believe, we'd ever die for these sins, we were merely freshmen.") To listening to it on cool summer nights, driving after All Access to Giffy's for ice cream, in the crowded car on the way home, and after trading a seat in Brian's car for one in John's, driving and finding those dark corners where we talked and made out and listened to the crickets.
A thousand memories hanging on that song.
