Richelle Mead and Succubus Heat!

I was fortunate enough to meet Richelle Mead today and get my hands on a copy of her latest Georgina Kincaid book, which is being widely released later this month. I took a few pictures and had someone take a picture of us while she was signing my books but I haven't uploaded them from the camera yet. I'm not sure if any of them will have turned out well since I didn't want to use the flash while she was speaking and forgot to open the flash when someone took our picture. Ah, well. I'll look tomorrow :)

Seeing Richelle was really interesting. She first read an excerpt from her upcoming-in-August book, Blood Promise, 4th in the Vampire Academy series. Just after hearing Chapter 1 and part of Chapter 2 of this book, I am already hooked and can't wait for August! Rose is such a fascinating character and after the ending of Shadow Kiss I am really anxious to see where her life is taking her. After that, Richelle answered questions from the audience (a small group of about a dozen people) and shared some details about the book covers (yes, the same woman portrays Georgina on all of the Succubus books; the guy on Frostbite has red eyes because the artistic department thought "it looks good that way"; no, Richelle has no real say in the cover images) as well as the number of books in each series (we'll get Georgina & Rose for 6 books each, Eugenie currently has four) and other odds and ends about the books and her life :)

It was neat to see her carrying a bag that a fan had given her at a previous signing (and mentioned she also loved the Little Dhampir version!) and, true to promise, playing with a bracelet gifted by another fan. It seems I'm not the only person who fidgets and plays with things constantly! :)

I am really glad I got the chance to go to the signing and of course super excited about being able to read Succubus Heat early - especially since our local library still doesn't list ANY copies on order. Hopefully Richelle Mead will return to the local bookstore in the future :)

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
I was lucky enough to get this book a little bit early at a book signing today and dove right in. The previous book in this series was more than a little sad, and this book wasn't any different. It starts out with Georgina really struggling to find her equilibrium again after losing Seth to a coworker, affecting both her work at the bookstore and for Jerome. Jerome, fed up with her attitude, decides to use her to help solve a problem he's facing with a neighboring archdemon up in Vancouver, BC.

Traveling between Vancouver and Seattle to try to appease both Jerome and Cedric (the archdemon in Vancouver), Georgina suddenly finds herself with an even larger problem. Jerome has gone missing, causing all of his underlings to lose their extra powers. Georgina and her friends are in a race against time to find Jerome before the higher-ups replace him with someone worse.

I really enjoyed this book, much more so than the last one. I still found it to be rather heart-wrenching, especially at the end, but I felt like Seth's character was more fully developed in this book which was nice. Georgina also really struggled with the challenge of reconciling the two aspects of herself, something that has been a key aspect of the previous books in this series as well.

I liked learning more about the immortal hierarchy and it was fun to revisit Georgina's world. I am very curious to see what happens next!
