Rupert Giles moved about the room with purpose and precision, closing the windows, gathering his keys and putting on his jacket. The last thing he expected was a knock on his door. But what was even more unexpected was when one of his visitors nearly knocked him off his feet with her enthusiastic hug.
“Dawn! What are you doing here? Is everything alright?”
The teen nodded and mumbled something indistinctly into his chest, not loosening her hold. He pushed her back slightly and tilted her face to have a closer look. She was crying, but they appeared to be happy tears. She giggled and tried again. “Giles! I’ve missed you so much!”
He chuckled and stroked her hair as she buried her head back into his chest. Sensing they were being watched he looked up and noticed his former Slayer standing just inside his door. “Hello Buffy.” He tried his best welcoming smile but knew it was tentative. Buffy was on alert staring at something just over his shoulder. Before he had time to turn she was across the room and throwing someone against the wall. “Ethan Rayne,” she spit out. Her tone deadly.
“Buffy! Let him go!” Giles commanded.
But Buffy ignored him and pushed her forearm tighter against Ethan’s throat.
“Diripio!”
Buffy flew about four feet back from Ethan. Before she could recover Giles followed with a neutralizing spell, its familiar green light surrounding her.
“Giles! What the Hell! Let me go. NOW!”
“Do you give me your word that you will remain calm and not attack anymore of my guests?”
She glared at him as she continued to struggle futilely against his magic. “Giles, that’s Ethan. Ya know, evil sorcerer,” she remarked snidely.
“Buffy, Ethan is my guest and one of my oldest friends. Now do you promise to behave or shall I leave you like that?”
She ignored Giles and demanded of Ethan, “What did you do to him? Undo it now and I may let you live.”
Giles sighed and shook his head. Buffy was not going to relent anytime soon. He heard soft footsteps on the staircase, “Rupert, I didn’t know we had visitors. We need to leave if we are going to make our flight.”
Buffy scowled and sent a fierce glare towards the beautiful brunette that appeared to be in her mid thirties. “Who the hell is she?”
Dawn approached the woman and held out her hand. “Hi. I’m Dawn and the rude blonde sitting in the magic field is my sister, Buffy. You must be Gwen. It’s nice to finally meet you.” Gwen shook hands politely with Dawn, but kept an uneasy eye on Buffy.
“Well at least she isn’t parading around here in one of your shirts and calling you Ripper,” Buffy muttered.
“Buffy! That is enough!” He turned to Ethan and Gwen as he tried to get his temper under control. “I’m sorry about this. Will you two wait in the car please? I won’t be long.” He sent a reassuring smile to Ethan, “I promise I’ll get you there in plenty of time.” He turned to Dawn, “Would you please call for a taxi?” He pulled out a few English notes for the fare and indicated the direction of the phone. With a last glare for her sister, Dawn slipped into the hallway and closed the door behind her.
Buffy sat on the floor, the green energy of his containment spell pulsing in time with his anger. Giles took in the defensive posture that had become the norm for his Slayer, arms wrapped around her middle and a look of pure defiance on her face. He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, bracing himself for the storm.
“What the hell is Ethan doing here? Why didn’t you tell me he escaped? And who is that woman? Damnit Giles, release me NOW!”
He chose to ignore her tirade and asked tiredly, “What are you doing here Buffy?”
“Trying to get some damn answers!”
“Buffy, you didn’t even know Ethan was here until you knocked on my door. So, once again, why are you here?” He glared back at her, knowing that in his current temper, he would have no difficulty outwaiting her.
She began to fidget and looked away. “I didn’t realize I needed a reason to see my Watcher and Dawn wanted to surprise you.”
He frowned at his Slayer’s fabrication. He had spoken with Dawn last week and they had made plans for him to take her around Oxford before her classes began.
“Dawn told you we should call first to make sure Giles didn’t have plans, but as usual you wouldn’t listen,” her sister snarked as she reentered the room. “The taxi will be here in fifteen minutes.”
Giles sighed. “We have a plane to catch. Dawn, if you’re still up for it, I’d love to show you around Oxford next week like we planned, but I understand if after today you’d rather postpone it.” He turned to look at the woman that he had devoted most of his life to, “Buffy, if you want to sit down like two mature adults next week and discuss whatever it was that brought you here then fine,” he held up a hand to silence her protest, “but don’t insult me by lying to me. I haven’t been your Watcher for some time and we haven’t spoken since Sunnydale. If you’re not going to at least try and be honest then there really isn’t any point.” He muttered the release spell as he went out the door.
Buffy leapt up and went after him, her Slayer speed allowing her to catch him before he reached the car where the others were waiting. She grabbed his arm and spun him around. “You’re just going to leave?” She didn’t say it out loud but both understood the implied “me” at the end of her question.
“Buffy, we have a plane to catch. We’ll be back next Thursday.” He shook himself free of her grip, “if you had called first I could have saved you the trip out here.”
“Giles! Where are you going that is so important that it can’t wait?” She demanded.
“To a wedding. Now we really must leave. Dawn, please lock up behind you.” Without another word or look back, he jumped into the car and sped off, leaving the stunned Slayer staring down the drive.
