My biggest concern about Obama's policies is his wealth redistribution. It is an issue that I am utterly opposed to, and I really resent that the Republicans have created this lashback. I think Americans are intelligent, compassionate, caring people that would help others and spend wisely if we had a fair and reasonable financial system. The last ( Read more... )

maybe it's that i was raised by social workers who saw firsthand the vulgarities of the economic disparities, but i think that a reasoned, measured redistribution of wealth is highly worthwhile. that is, uber-rich people need less of their money than uber-poor folks on the frontlines of production and should therefore pay higher taxes, especially given that the disparities today are so big, and that minimum wage is unlivable. i believe that the creation of jobs while building infrastructure benefits everyone. crime goes down when folks are less desperate. people without health insurance use the ER too much, which leads to higher health and monetary costs for /everyone/. i dunno. i'm no economics scholar, and i get that a free market needs to, well, be free. and that individuals need to be held accountable. and yeah, the see-saw thing. i'll echo in on damning W., too. it's all gone too far.

but would americans really spend wisely with a reasonable financial system? is that enough? do we have the education? the morality (for want of a better word)? isn't this plugged-in culture just breeding an attitude of gimme more, gimme now, damn the costs?

I say no, in general, we don't have the morality or the education. I think people need limits, boundaries and laws. Very few of us will "give up" what we believe is ours.

I spend all day in a classroom with a number of young people who overwhelmingly believe that they are Entitled, with a capital E. to everything they want. And they don't even understand what it means to labor, to share with others, to sacrifice, to make do.

I love them and think they have good hearts, but damn their selfishness. Once that frontal lobe fully develops, they are going to have to start exhibiting some form of charitableness. Or I will hunt them down and tickle them all to death.
