I'm putting the image behind the cut, as it's pretty large... 1024x768 at 100% quality.

Well technically, in a purely conceptual sense, yes. I could kill this one myself. However, there are 2 problems with that idea...

1. I'm fucking terrified of spiders. Let me clairfy that, since I don't sound histerical over this issue, which one might expect. I love spiders, when they are sitting perfectly still on a web, minding their own business. The second they move (especially move towards me), I freak the fuck out. The fact that this is a black widow, which was the source of my aracnaphobia to begin with, makes it that much harder for me to get in there and kill it. The fact that she's embedded in a forest of webbing (which doesn't show up on the picture, but she's under about a foot of webbing there), also fucks with my head. I hate running into spider webs, that just creeps me out. So while it's technically possible for me to kill one, it's psychologically very unlikely that I ever will.

2. The more rational side of me has to put two and two together here. This is the second black widow I've seen in my house in the last 2 months. Where are are 2, there could damn well be 20 or more. Also, since I've got proof here that the female has met and killed her male, there is bound to be at least one egg sac out there, maybe more. I'll never find them all, and I can't wake up this spring to a house covered in baby blacks. The only way to be reasonably sure is to have an exterminator come out and take care of the problem once and for all.

So, as you can see, my being a complete wuss aside, it just makes more sense to hire this one out instead of trying to deal with it personally.

Gah! Those are 2 (or 22 ::ahem::) very compelling reasons to call an exterminator. Make haste and get thee to a 'phone!
