Jin tried to hide the small smile on his lips as he read the message on his phone. He really tried, but he figured out no one was looking at him anyway and that there is nothing wrong with smiling when you read a message. He brushed off all other thoughts and stood up.

“Hey. I’ll be going first, okay?” He said with slight turn of his head to his companions.

It was a Thursday night, Jin and a couple friends were in a certain club in downtown Roponggi. Jin’s eyes scanned the people inside of the little VIP room they were in, a couple of his socialite guy friends, drunk and tipsy, and his few good mates in the industry, Yamashita, Nishikido and Yuu who were equally drunk and tipsy. And some young women, who Jin guessed were his friends’ girlfriends of the week.

Yamashita’s eyes, sparkly with alcohol, lit up and smirked. “Oh. Really? It’s still early. Are you meeting up with Nicole?”

Shinji, a young wealthy socialite known for his tight friendship with the Jimusho’s idols, tugged Yamashita, “Let him be, Pi!” And Shinji let out a growl of laughter Jin knew too well.

“Whatever.” Jin smiled a little. “I’ll be seeing you guys, ok.” Jin high five the rest of his friends and bow an inch or two for the ladies before going out of the room.

He elbowed his way out of club, not worrying of he gets recognized and spotted. The moment he stepped out of the humid, neon-colored club, he took out his phone and typed in his reply to the message earlier.

No. I’m out. Where are you?

He started driving, his destination is still unknown but he will know it anyway later on. It’s the same always anyway.

He tapped his fingers in the stirring wheel when five minutes had past and his band mate for 9 years still haven’t replied. He reached out for his phone and typed again.

Hey. Did you just finish work? Have you eaten already?

Jin unconsciously grinned when his phone vibrated after a minute. It read:

Yeah. Do you want to eat?

Jin typed in a reply as fast he can think:

The usual place. I’m on my way.

Jin placed his phone in the dashboard, knowing that Kamenashi won’t reply anymore. He simply stepped on the gas.

Jin simply nodded when Kazuya sat in front of him. They were in a small Chinese restaurant, secluded in Chinatown, open 24/7, perfect for people like them whose dinner is usually taken two hours before breakfast.

It was always like this. At least once a month, Kamenashi or Akanishi would message each other in the middle of the night to meet up and eat and drink a little.

They eat in the comfortable silence. Kamenashi was wearing his casual clothes already: an old rolling stone shirt he brought in one of his trips in the US, a faded black leather jacket that he brought with Jin two years ago, and a fashionable, washed-out and worn-out jeans. The traces of the day’s make-up on his face are still visible, and his hair was trampled in a messy ponytail. While Jin looks exactly like an idol, a fur-lined coat and enough bling-blings.

Jin amusedly noticed that Kazuya was wearing the arm belt he gave him 5 years ago. It was like the pants that he was wearing, fashionably worn-out.

“Was it a photoshoot?’ Jin asked, a start of a small talk.

Kamenashi simply nodded. “DUET. August issue.” He added.

“Promotion for?”

“Um. The Docomo Ad.” Kazuya lift his head to finally meet Jin’s eyes.

“It’s alright. Don’t think about. I had mine earlier this year, remember?” Jin shrugged and continued eating his noodles.

Kamenashi’s lips twitched a little and just sighed, trying to push off the words that he wanted to say.

“Oh yeah. Nicole called me the other day. Asking if I know where were you. I said, better call Yamashita or Nishikido for I don’t know. You know, Jin, you got yourself one possessive girlfriend.” Jin noticed the Kamenashi said this with a smile on his face.

Nicole Van Cooper is Akanishi’s American girlfriend for more than a half a year already. He met her while he was in the Los Angeles almost a year ago. She’s a young, half-Greek socialite in the area he stayed for six months. At first she doesn’t know that Akanishi Jin is a household name in Japan and in some other households on Asia. She simply saw Jin as one hot Japanese guy, period.

When the time to return to Japan finally came, Nicole followed him under the pretence of her parents and her American boyfriend that she will be studying in Japan. Jin agreed to ride along this relationship despite the fact that Nicole has a rich lover in the States whom her parents, friends believed is perfect for her. The engagement between Nicole and the American guy is just waiting to happen.

He sees this relationship as a game, and doesn’t know if the thing he feels whenever Nicole smile, cry, hugged him and sleep with him is love. All he knows is that it feels good and will probably last until her wedding in some Caribbean Cruise Ship.

“She did? We fought the other day and we kissed and make-up. As usual.” Jin laughed.

Kazuya shook his head. “You don’t admit it but you love her.”

Jin did not answer. He licked his lips and took a swig in his sake. He was hesitating to ask something, “How ‘bout you-“

“Stop.” Kazuya sighed and lean his back on his chair. Akanishi just stared at him with his unfaltering eyes that Kamenashi knows too well that won’t budge. He sighed, once again, in defeat and added, “Kyoko and I broke up for more than six months already. And this concern that you guys have been airing out are starting to worn me out.” Jin noticed that despite his seemingly cold and irritated words, he sounded so calm and serene.

Jin eyed him a moment, and blinked. “Don’t flatter yourself.” Jin said with playful smirk. “It’s you who had a serious relationship with an old hag for two years, not us. I believe you can fully take care of yourself. Heck, anyone can do anything after sleeping with a 40 year old. Just like Fear Factor.”

Kazuya snorted and then smiled. Jin just insulted his ex-girlfriend for two years but he wasn’t affected nor hurt, it was simply a thing of the past. Kazuya finished off his sake, and was on his way of getting another bottle.

Once again, the comfortable silence enveloped them as they continued eating and drinking. Only the sounds of chopsticks, ceramic spoons, plates and sake bottles and cups were heard.

Jin wondered how long has it been, how long has passed since words were no longer needed when they are together.

When they were younger, they were close friends. Not as close as him and Yamashita though, Jin thought. But they fairly get along fine. They were young and innocent. But eventually they saw through the façade and agenda that the whole staff and management has in store for their little, innocent friendship.

Yes, it initially irked them up. Tried to distance from each other and proved all the people wrong about them. But eventually, they realized why not play along? It will be mutually beneficial anyway, they will get popular and the Jimusho will earn more. All they have to do is drop some hints of more-than-friendship-relationship in their photoshoots, concerts and interviews. No harm done, in fact it made their relationship somewhat better.

This lasted for a couple of their pre-debut years. Their friendship, Jin noticed, matured the same pace as the both of them. At first it was old-school real friendship, developed into a relationship with malice in front of the camera, but a stable, dependable one off-cam, but as popularity slowly crept up to their life, their stable friendship eventually cracked up as new people and experiences enter their lives.

And irony also did not escape their roller coaster life. After the Jimusho spend an awful a lot of time in building up their love team, one day they got a call from upstairs telling them to distance from each other as people are seeing more than fan service in their acts. The chemistry between them is just too real to handle. And the call did not just happen once, but four times.

Both of them shrugged it off as an overreaction from the bosses and life went on. But somehow, the drifting was inevitable.

They drifted apart, without even them noticing it.

Akanishi has his guess on when exactly the drifting came and what trigger it. It was Kamenashi’s debut with Yamashita. It was plain envy and jealous that Jin felt. It was childish, Jin knew, but eventually all his anxieties, stress and, of course, the projects that was supposed to be for him that ended up with Kazuya, pilled up and Jin simply no longer saw the need to maintain his communication with the younger one.

Their debut came, and they’ve reached their all time high in popularity. But Akanishi’s life is also reaching an all time low. He hated his job. And his off the cameras escapades and scandals were hitching things up. He wanted to escape and take a rest. The Jimusho agreed to it, after all it’s a nice scandal to stir up the imagination of the masses and will result to a needed publicity for the recently debuted group. After all, a bad publicity is still publicity.

Once again, Jin silently cursed the Jimusho for managing things to make it beneficial for the both of them. He indeed got the rest he needed, KAT-TUN became insanely popular as people became curious if they can handle without Jin and the Jimusho earned millions at it. He might hate how the Jimusho treats them like mindless pawns but he will not leave the agency. He will screw up and make the upstairs insane with frustration over him. They can’t fire him. He is Akanishi Jin. The Jimusho created a monster.

Kamenashi, on the other hand, is a different story. If Akanishi simply needs to smile and hips-roll to sell records and top the TV ratings, Kamenashi needs to do a little more extra effort. He wasn’t a born star, just like Jin is. He needs all the projects he can have on his hands on.

Kazuya loved the spotlight; he embraces every scandal and stress that comes along it. And he will do everything and anything to maintain his status right now. The only gamble he made while in the industry is having a relationship, a serious one, to Koizumi Kyoko who is 20 years senior than him.

He doesn’t know what gotten into him, but he was addicted to her. She was old and wise. She did not exactly have taken care of him, unlike what most people thought, but instead she ridiculed and mocked his inexperience in life. But despite how lowly she sees Kazuya is, she maintained their relationship and it lasted until Kyoko finally got tired of their little game.

Kamenashi never had the chance to contemplate whether he really indeed loved her or he was simply being in his rebel stage, just like the phase all the Jimusho’s pawns once and will undergo.

He might not exactly love the way the Jimusho is handling their talents but he isn’t crazy or desperate enough to face the Great Wall the Jimusho is. He is, at least, thankful for their protection they have given him amidst all the scandals he was in.

Despite their different beliefs towards the industry they are in, Akanishi and Kamenashi managed to retain the unspoken bond they have and set aside their personal beliefs and principles. There is always a lingering respect reserved for each other.

They share their thoughts to each other rarely, if not never, for they know words doesn’t really matter much, unlike the comfortable silence they always long for and have together. Between them, a simple nod, a glint in the eyes, frown and even a breath can perfectly explain their anxieties, fears, happiness, a day’s work and even last night’s wild party.

After Akanishi returned from Los Angeles, their relationship with each other faced a new revival. It seems that their past was now viewed by the both of them as nothing as childish exploits.

Slowly, their relationship behind the camera was returning to normal. In front of the camera, however, the need to talk to each other and to acknowledge each others’ presence and existence is utmost neglected. It was as if, they are scared that the upstairs will be alarmed and threatened on their friendship, once again. This may be the case but they never voiced it out nor give it a thought or two.

They might not see each other as often as they did but, just like Kazuya’s song, the bond won’t disappear. They might not see each other as the first person they run too whenever there are problems, but they are positive that the other will be there support them silently anyway. They never acknowledge each other as their friend or anything like that off and on cam. They never saw the need. And also…

***

After two hours of small talk about their life and work, they decided to call it a night. They have an early call tomorrow for a rehearsal.

Akanishi paid the bill without any confirmation from Kazuya. It was his turn to take the bill, it was their little routine. Kazuya went out of the secluded restaurant first and lit his cigarette. He looked up the sky and noticed two things: first, it was ugly for it was gloomy without stars and moon, and secondly, it was blurry, hazy and… was moving? He felt a little tipsy, probably with all the wine he had taken in. He was never good with alcohol. He coughed as he exhaled some nicotine smoke.

“Better cut-off with your smokes.” Kamenashi heard Jin as he finally went out of the restaurant.

“Yes, mother.” Kazuya smirked as stepped on the cigarette butt.

They bid a brief and almost mindless, automatic good-bye and good night.

Jin was already on his way to his car when he noticed Kazuya, wobbling his way to his own car.

“Can you drive?”

Kamenashi look up to him and smirked, “Yes, mother. I believe I can.” And Kazuya stuck his tongue out.

This was the sign Akanishi needed. A sober Kamenashi will never act childishly off the camera. Kazuya hated being off guard and be taken lightly by people around him.

Jin sighed and took the car keys in Kamenashi’s hand. The younger protested when Jin took it but Jin ignored him nonetheless. “Stay here.”

Akanishi went inside the restaurant again and return after five minutes.

“I’m going to drive you home. I already asked the owner if we can leave your car here. We will just get it first thing in the morning.”

“Damn you, Jin. I’m not a kid.” Kamenashi said almost sounding angrily, but he went inside the other car anyway.

Akanishi locked the other’s car and went inside his own. Soundlessly, he started the car and finally noticed that Kamenashi had fallen asleep already.

He reached for the seat belt in the passenger seat and secured Kazuya. Jin was somewhat thankful, he remembered his caretaker changing his bed sheets. Kazuya always hated waking up in smelly sheets.

…And also, they might never acknowledge it out loud or even in their deepest, most private thoughts, but they simply believe that the other is somewhat, a short of a soul mate; definitely not a lover but not exactly just a good mate.

one-shot, akame
