Random inexplicable urges

I'm sure I've mentioned to some people here about how several months ago I had a sudden explicable desire to eat homemade chocolate chip cookies, which led to a sudden baking frenzy, during which I kept my oven busy and scoured the internet and countless obscure ancient tomes for the secrets of making really good baked products. Those of you who know me probably aren't surprised by this, as I, uh, like unhealthy foods and would really like to take advantage of my metabolism while it exists, which everybody I've talked to over the age of 40 advises me to do.

Recently I had another random, but much more inexplicable, urge to play football/soccer (henceforth called "football" in accordance with international standards). This time, I have absolutely no idea why I have this urge. With the exception of gym classes, which don't count, the last time I ever played soccer was when I was 8. What is more surprising is that I in general dislike organized team sports, and that I tend to prefer sports like swimming (or, in one instance, Calvinball).

What is behind this urge? I'll admit that among the organized team sports, football was my favorite. Though it was fun to watch, I never really liked playing basketball, and some...negative experiences in high school left me bitter about American football for some time. Football was different, though. There was something vaguely attractive about the dexterous manipulation of the ball using your feet, or the stealing away of said ball from other people also using your feet. Plus, if someone really annoyed you, you could always kick him in the shin guards and steal the ball, though I suspect that it was a lot easier to get away with doing this when one was 8, than if someone my age were to try that.

I do wonder if I've been playing too much Blitzball. Not in real life, sadly, but rather the minigame from Final Fantasy X, which fun to play by itself. The game itself is like some ungodly combination of football and swimming, such that if they actually built giant floating spherical water stadiums and if people were able to breathe underwater indefinitely I would be all over that game.

Also, there is always Shaolin Soccer. For those of you who haven't seen it, this movie is pretty random, very silly, and downright hilarious. I think this is about as random as the flying saucer from Life of Brian, but with engrish subtitles as an added bonus.

random, sports, musing, insomnia, final fantasy, very random, movies, late night
