"What I offered my friend was the dangerous revelation of desire. I began a sentence with "I want," and we both blushed and looked around. I told Amber: I want to write a great book - I want to make a difference - I want to have adventures and take enormous risks and be everything they say we are and not give a damn what anyone says. Amber told me: I want to live in this scary city and do everything they say we do - date famous gorgeous strong women and wear outrageous clothes and carry it all off with such a sense of style they don't even see me coming - I want to make movies and write articles and speak to academics without fear, or at least not let them see that I'm afraid.
