On Saturday night, I approached the stash to see if suitable bulky yarn existed for Seth's next knitting project -- a scarf to be donated to the craft auction on December 1 to help raise money for
Loretta Kennedy, a local woman who works for
Fare Start, a local nonprofit, and who is undergoing breast cancer treatment.
But this is what I found:

Max, pleading total ignorance.

The scene of the crime.

What we discovered.

Crisis management.
In the end, Seth and I picked up some new yarn from Hilltop for his scarf--pictures to come--and last night, I toyed with some stash novelty yarn and leftover Kid Classic for my own donatable scarf. The Kid Classic knitted up great on 11s, but the pretty little flags were almost invisible. Enter the mohair that just happened to be sitting on the coffee table--two balls of Soft Kid. I had pulled the magenta ball out of the stash to check for moths because, as you can see, the pink ball was quite shredded. Usually Max only managed to break a ball of yarn up slightly, and I end up with maybe three mini-balls of yarn to work with.* But as you can see, the pink Soft Kid above was decimated. I believe it's the construction; Soft Kid has a really lovely chain of mohair surrounding a nearly invisible and very thin nylon core--this core stayed intact nearly throughout the ball, but the mohair braid was eaten up. On the other hand, when Max scavenged a ball of Kidsilk Haze *and* a partial ball of Kid Classic from a different area of the stash about a month ago, both yarns were relatively intact and usable (after some detangling and re-winding).
*Okay, so Max loooooooves the mohair and has gotten into it before. Last time, though, it was by clawing through a plastic bag that was itself inside an old-fashioned piece of luggage that was open at the top. After that incident, I zipped up that bag o'yarn. This is the first time she managed to fish yarn out of the basket storage; I moved that basket full of mohair up to the top of the cabinet and put some cotton on the bottom.
