Posted in my own LJ but here for you brilliant lovelies as well.

Part of my Apocafic thing that I seem to have a bunch of ideas for, but can never get the mood right when I try to write it. This one came out alright, although not beta'ed, but I when I tried to go forward, it didn't sound right. So here, have this.

The end of the world happened quickly and, when Wendy looks back on it, there was nothing that could have been done to stop it. Nothing that she knew of then, and nothing that she knows of now. Three years of being a Middleman, and she couldn't stop it. But still, the Middleman hadn't been able to stop it either. That isn't much comfort though, not when she's standing in the middle of what had been a packed, vibrant, noisy city; now empty, ghostly, so quiet it hurts.

“You never seem to get upset about this,” she says, turning to the Middleman, who is crouched behind her checking his pack.

He stops but doesn't look up. “Of course I'm upset,” he says, trying for his normal tone of voice. Wendy turns away, but catches his barely audible, “And I've lost more than you can ever know,” before he stands and hefts his bag.

She lets it go and hooks her thumbs in the straps of her own pack. “Where to next, MM?”

He takes a deep breath and straightens up his spine. “I believe we should return to Los Angeles,” he says. “Shall we continue?”

They haven't been back in Los Angeles since they left to investigate some strange phenomena disrupting the EM fields on the Eastern coast. That was three months ago, and those EM fields had only been the beginning of the end.

Wendy wants to hope that her friends are still alive, but she's also afraid of finding out the truth. But it's time now. They've done everything here that they can do. So she lets the Middleman take the lead, and puts one foot in front of the other without complaint.

After Chicago, they decide to avoid inhabited areas as much as possible. Wendy decides that there are things worse than ghost cities.
